Cabernet Sauvignon
I'm thinking I might like this. I'm going to look for Kelly's Revenge, since I think that's what I tried that I liked. |

If you want something that is slightly sweet you will probably want to avoid most the commonly known reds like cabernet, merlot, malbec, shiraz/syrah, pinot noir, chianti etc.
Have you tried more than a sip or two of the above? Had a decent glass of one (not expensive, maybe $10+ bottle)? The cheap stuff you would have a wedding or such is pretty rough and more so if you don't have a taste for reds. I think there are some Italian and Spanish reds that are not dry but I don't know what they are. |

I'm thinking I'm heading to Brown Derby International Wine Center after work tomorrow. I think you can sample some there, or tell the people what your tastes are and see what they recommend.

I'd recommend Beaujolais based on what you described. It's relatively sweet as far as red wines go and is light bodied, which will minimize your after taste.
Shiraz is relatively dry. They are also full-bodied, which is going to tend to leave what you described as an after taste. Zinfandel would be good as far as the sweetness goes, but these are huge wines. Again you are going to experience an after taste. What are you eating? This will have a significant effect in terms of how you perceive the wine. I'd recommend that you at least have some cheese if you aren't having some food with the wine. White wine is easier to drink without food than red, which may explain part of your preference for whites. ***Above all,*** go to a store that has a decent stock. Ask someone there for a recommendation on a particular bottle in your price range after describing your preferences. Don't ask just anyone who works at the store. Ask the person who looks like they know something about wine. There are GREAT values at the $15 to $20 price point, but you will only find them at a larger store with a knowledgeable staff. |

Cabernet is great for steaks if you like a dryer wine. If you like a sweeter wine, Zinfandel is good for steaks. Both would probably also work with pasta and a thick spicy meat sauce. Based on your preferences, you probably would not enjoy either of these without strongly flavored food.

Sometimes wine people will get pissy. Be careful. You have to be like "I'm looking for a (adjective) wine that goes well with a (food) for my (high class occassion)"
