There's nothing wrong with parents supporting their kids, whether it's financially or emotionally, as long as that support is a jumpstart and not a crutch. And I was not my intention to steer the thread in this direction with my flippant comment. My bad. |

my parents are both stoners, have been for as long as I can recall. my dad can't handle money at all--my dad is a sad case. he's very intelligent, but has made the worst decisions you can imagine in his life--my mom was a high school dropout who had a child at 16 (my oldest half-sister, trudy). growing up, we never had much. I learned from an early age that the only way to make it out of my situation was to work, work, and work some more. when it came to college, they always had money for my older sister charlotte. however, when it was time for me, they'd declared bankruptcy (with $500 bucks borrowed from me, fwiw, that's never been paid back), and had nothing to give. I don't hate my parents--far from it. they're the best goddamned motivation I have to keep going. I value hard work and take pride in the fact that I'm nothing like my parents--I'm as straight-laced as can be... I don't drink (well, maybe once a year if that), don't smoke, no drugs, etc. I work full-time, and go to college full-time. I'll be paying off school when I'm still 60 years old, but I take a ton of pride in knowing that everything I own is mine. is it difficult? hell yeah. but I can tell you that there's nothing more invigorating than knowing that I rely on nobody for anything. I guess that's why I look down on those who suck on the teet--is a bit of it jealousy? maybe. I've never sat down to think about it. |

Didn't get a dime for college. Paid my own way and out of that debt about 5 years removed from school. I was the first person in both sides of my family to attend college. We will pay for my son's college as long as he maintain's A's and B's and trys to get as many grants/scholorships as possible.
