So far, so good.

I like Spotify, but that AC/DC tribute band sucks and you can't get the real thing

Probably nothing. The way I understand it, you're not easily traceable by IP, so my guess is that you have very little chance of suffering any personal consequences of using it.
For me, I've gotten to the point that I can afford to pay a modest amount for entertainment, and it's worth that to me to be on the up-and-up. Artists of the world work like everyone else, and I kind of feel bad stealing their work. Don't get me wrong. When I was a college student, I was as big of a pirate as you could ever find. I certainly don't judge people who choose to go that route. But for me, you can have an almost unlimited access to music for $5/month. There are very few people in this world who can't legitimately afford that. |

And now that I'm on a computer...
I'm a Spotify Premium user, and I love it. It costs $10/month, so you have to consider whether it's worth roughly 10 albums per year to have it. But if it is, it's fantastic. I'd guess that around 80% of anything you could ever want to listen to is on there. So, while it's annoying to not be able to listen to that one album you really care about, it's awesome to be able to (legally) listen to an album on the same day it comes out. There are also a variety of social features that make it easy and fun to share with friends if that's your thing. On the other hand, I do constantly worry about Spotify disappearing one of these days. It's not a huge concern, but if I theoretically bought 1 album per month for the next 10 years, I'd have a hell of a music collection. By just streaming online, though, I own nothing and am subject to the whims of the labels' contracts with Spotify. So that's the big drawback. I'll also mention that, if you're gonna do Spotify to the fullest, you probably need a smart phone and Spotify Premium ($10/month). Otherwise, you're limited to listening on a computer, and that's not much of a music replacement for most people. |

Maestro.fm is interesting. You have an app on your mobile device and the agent on your PC, and your entire, illegally downloaded music collection is available 24/7.

Haven't tried that one. I've been using audiogalaxy, which does the same thing.

I use Pandora at work. Many of the labs in my technical training courses run about an hour, so I have a couple of goto channels that I'll play in the background. All instrumental stuff for the most part, a little more upbeat in the afternoon. My primary work channels are "Ryan Farish", "Requiem for a Tower" and "Hills of Eternity", while my personal tastes lean towards the heavier "Demons and Wizards" and "Nightwish" channels.

Spotify now also has the radio feature that is WAY better than Pandora's. I have since deleted Pandora from my phone.

Spotify also has a variety of "apps" that help you find music as well. There are some that are social (e.g., last.fm) and others that just use a third-party algorithm to try and predict music you'll like (e.g., Moodagent). (As a caveat, I have no idea what is restricted for free users these days, so I can't 100% guarantee that everything I described above is free.) |

Much better song repository. I don't have to hear the same songs over and over again. In addition to that I can listen to whatever I want whenever I want, add songs I like to playlist via the radio interface, and stream them or have them available offline. The apps feature is cool too. It provides all the legal functionality I ever need from a music program and more. Oh... and no ads.

As spotify picks up popularity it will just get better. The Pitchfork app is amazing. Having all their new album reviews come up with the album playlist attached is a indie music lover's dream. Rolling Stone has similar functionality and I look forward to more music sites joining in. The Fader already has as well.
