Update on my friend: Driver Upset Over Random Shooting In KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Blue Springs man said he was the target of random violence on a drive through Kansas City, KMBC's Peggy Breit reported. Early Sunday morning, Chris Culbertson said he and a friend were driving home after a night at the Country Club Plaza. Culbertson said he traveled east from the Plaza onto Swope Parkway and was stopped at a stoplight at Prospect Avenue when a man with an assault rifle stepped out of a car. "As soon as I got to a full stop, I heard a couple of pops," Culbertson said. Culbertson said the first thing he noticed was the large gun aimed right at him. "Next thing I know, my window's shattered, my arm's numb and my ears are ringing like crazy," Culbertson said. Breit reported that another car driving the opposite direction was riddled with bullets, but none of the four people in that car were injured. Culbertson said he sped off down Swope Parkway and veered into a nearby shopping center parking lot. "All I could think about was to get as far away as I could as quickly as I could, because I didn't want my buddy to be a sitting duck in the passenger seat," Culbertson said. He said he hailed a passing police car for assistance. Culbertson was treated at a local hospital and was released, but he said he still has a long recovery ahead of him. Bullet fragments are lodged in Culbertson's arm and back, and he said he's also dealing with the emotional trauma of what happened. "It's just so unbelievable. It still doesn't make sense when I tell people I got shot," Culbertson said. He said it's terrifying to realize how close he and his friend were to being killed. "I happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and glad that it turned out as well as it did, considering the circumstances," Culbertson said. He said he's grateful to be alive and he is trying to focus on his recovery. The only description of the shooter is that he was wearing a black do-rag and a shirt with red in it. Anyone with information in the case can call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. |
