2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I seem to remember reading that Greinke was a drag in the clubhouse here the first go-around. I don't know that I want to bring that in with a bunch of young guys.

Greinke's an ace. He's a top-flight starter with a career WHIP of 1.25. I'd deal with it.

Greinke
Odorizzi
Hochevar
Chen
Mendoza...Duffy/Paulino later.

Detroit once had to deal with this perception, too. And that's the inevitable cost of doing business on the cheap for so damn long.

Once we get over the initial hurdle, much like Detroit, we can return to the market norm for FAs.

Sign Greinke. Aces don't come available too often, and his delivery is silky smooth, which gives the best hope for health.

Paulino and Duffy will be late in 2013 if all goes well. And Crow has never shown starting pitcher capabilities. Guy only really has two good pitches.

Detroit has the 5th highest payroll in baseball at $132MM and three different players making over $20MM per year. I think they've just realized that to really compete for titles they need to spend big.

Love him or hate him, I can't believe anyone could argue that David Glass will ever agree to a payroll anywhere close to that. Winning isn't so important to him that he would risk losing profit.

Our payroll this year is $60MM. Coming off the books this year $6MM from Soria, $5.6MM from Sanchez, and $4MM from Broxton. If we could also find someone to take Frenchy's salary, that is another $6.75MM.

So that is about $22MM that could come off the books that could be used to lure an elite starter and/or two solid starters. Frenchy would be replaced by Myers and Broxton replaced in-house with someone like Herrera or Holland.

If we're willing to push our payroll up to around $80MM, the possibilities become eye-opening.

Supposedly we have stock piled $12-15MM each year over the last 2 years that we are willing to spend. I think Moore has said we can handle a $75MM payroll and anything we spend under that on a given year will be saved and used for future contracts.

This Greinke info is interesting... considering what I heard Dayton's off-record thoughts were back in April (basically, everyone hated him, he's kind of crazy, we won't push that hard to re-sign him). But maybe they've reversed course. That was before the Duffy and Paulino elbow explosions...

But I think they need to acquire TWO starting pitchers before the start of next season, and I have a hard time seeing Greinke WANT to come back. He said he wanted out because they were still several years away from winning... not sure they've done enough to convince him of that.

Maybe if they acquire another pitcher first (move some legit prospects for a pitcher), Greinke is more amenable to coming back, I don't know.

I think at this point you leave Gordon in the leadoff spot and leave him alone. he's obviously much more comfortable hitting there than anywhere else.

Gordon
Myers
Moose
Butler
Hosmer
Perez
Cain
Gio
Escobar

Greinke (just playing along)
Acquisition No. 2 (Garza, Marcum, Brandon McCarthy, etc.)
Chen
Hochevar
Mendoza/Teaford/Adcock/filler while waiting for Paulino or Duffy. They can and should actually try Crow as a starter at least in the offseason and ST, but we'll see. If Montgomery or Dwyer or Lamb is ready, they could be in the mix here, too.

Bullpen:

Crow (I don't think he'll stick as a starter)
Holland
Collins
Herrera
Coleman
leftover filler

I think that was because the ball club wasn't winning and didn't have the pieces around him to win. With the team "getting better" and hopefully competing soon that wouldn't be the case.

I think Duncan is right. We've got the ammo to acquire someone now. We probably have more ammo than any of the contenders, plus it won't hurt us long term with the depth we have in the minors.

I really like McCarthy, following that strategy. And I agree...that would have to figure in Greinke's mind. I would add that Duncan, I think Odorizzi would be in the mix for the 3 spot next year...which would be ironic to convince Greinke that we've become a lot more competitive with 3 pieces we acquired...for him.
