Sony has been very eager to capitalize on the multiple mistakes Microsoft made in rolling out the Xbox One and now a new report from IGN suggests that Sony’s plans to stick a shiv into Microsoft may have been in the works for months. Unnamed sources tell IGN that Sony decided to scrap plans to require gamers to buy a PlayStation Eye sensor long before it unveiled pricing information at E3 in June. Ditching the Kinect-like PlayStation Eye let Sony knock a full $100 off the price tag for its next-generation console. More crucially, Sony also didn’t tell any of its partners about plans for a price cut to keep Microsoft in the dark. The result was that Sony earned the good will of many gamers by offering a lower-cost console that didn’t have any of the controversial DRM restrictions that Microsoft last week removed after weeks of intense criticism.

Those sneaky bastards.

Nice job Sony, if true.
Its a nice job but at the same time wasted a lot of people developing games to use the eye.

Because now you can wait to see what aspects work/don't work with XONE and then use that to improve this eye crap later on if you want.

Better to be late to the game and do it right (XBox, PS1) than be out first and **** it up (Dreamcast.)

I went back home and visited family, my brother has a ps3 and owns Uncharted 2. I must have spent 6 hours straight playing the multiplayer, most fun I have ever had on any game.

Purchasing power was most certainly not stronger then than it is now. Average wages have grown in real terms across the board in this country. Consumer confidence was no higher in the early 80s or 90s than it is now either. Late 80s and late 90s, yes, though those numbers are consistent with the 2000s up until 2008 obviously. Additionally, the relative strength of the dollar has no bearing on this discussion. If you don't believe me, there is plenty of resources like the BLS that will confirm that.

I remember when I was young, my mother and I would go down to the city market in KC and buy games from some vendor there for substantially cheaper than at the retail shops. I'm pretty sure there was something fishy going on with that.

Not sure on purchasing power, but unemployment was a bit lower for most of the 90's, and also energy costs were significantly lower. People are definitely much more price sensitive now, also especially towards technology. When SNES and Sega Genesis came out the only real alternative was a $2.5k pc that did gaming, now there are many more alternatives in gaming.
