09 Olathe Marathon Sat, Mar. 28th --In honor of victims of cancer -- and my first !
Greetings Planeteers!
Next Saturday, March 28th, I will be running in the 2009 Olathe Marathon! This will be my first attempt at running a marathon. I have been running consistently for about a year and have run off and on since my army days (got out in 99). Last October I came across the Olathe marathon and decide to train and do it. I am 31 years old and need to get started on my 'bucket list'. I found an 18 week training program and started it in November. I have trained all winter and followed it to a tee. I suppose I am as ready as I will ever be... 3 pairs of running shoes later I have racked up the following stats: Total Workouts: 67 Total Distance: 439.62 miles Total Duration(hh:mm:ss): 61:41:29 Average Pace: 8:25 Min/Mile. During a long training run about 2 months ago, I decided that I would run this in honor of people who have fought or are fighting cancer (my 30 year old wife was treated with surgery, chemo, and radiation in 2008 and we are still looking for our new normal) There were days during chemo that every step she took was extremely hard and it was hard not to quit, and this race is my attempt to understand how that feels. I have collected money to donate to a local family, as well as having a memorial shirt made to wear during the race. It has the names of friends and family of folks who have fought cancer. (Both sides are full) Anyway thanks for reading, wish me luck, and if you have a name of someone you would like me to add to my memorial list (on the Facebook group I created) let me know. It is amazing and sad how many people have been affected by cancer. My sympathy to all of you who have lost loved ones. My goal is to finish the 26.2 mile race in under 3hrs and 50 mins. Thanks for reading, and any tips from others who have run marathons would be much appreciated. |

Hmm... I'm used to running long distances, but not with no headphones. That REALLY blows.
I definitely want to, though . . . ****.... |

According to some others here that is a non issue disclaimer... everyone will be having some tunes. 70 bucks to enter, I think.

So Im guessing you work in Olathe? Race starts and finishes at Garmin. I think it said 1700 registered runners. Might affect traffic...

Well that was interesting, I just finished a 4 mile run in a pouring rain that would bring back memories of hurricane Katrina under a sky that looked like Baghdad circa 1991. It did not do wonders for my time, but since I am in final taper, I can cope.

Football players play in blizzards. If they have any feelings for cancer patients they'll get out there in the snow and run, run, RUN!!!!!

Well, you could still go run 26.2 if you REALLY want to. You can even wear headphones!
