The Fishing Thread

So how many of you are into fishing? What do you fish for and how often do you go? Any tips for how to get the monster of your choice, lures, bait, flies? Feel free to throw in a fishing story or two as well. What was your best or worst experience while out fishing?

I was up the Catskills this weekend and caught an 18" rainbow on a flash back pheasent tail. In my years of fly fishing that fly has caught me more fish than any other hands down.

Besides the lunker there were four smaller ones but that was certainly the highlight.

That's a nice size fish, especially for the east. PT is always a great fly. We don't get the mayfly hatches down here that you all do up there. We're mainly scud/sowbug and midge territory, though there are times when a pheasant tail or a hare's ear will definitely do the trick.

For the Fishing related Definition of Iowanian-world hippies will be defined for future purposes as:

noun: Hip-py
iowanian for ditchweed American Pondwrecker

Definition:
"Mulleted-caucasian-dope-smoker-Americans(MCDSA), often found consuming Old Milwaukee, smoking weed they've found in a ditch, and typically work as siding crew laborers"

These MCDSA's are known to pillage a fishing reserve like Locust swarms on a wheat field. They tell and bring their friends, keep every fish they catch, discard empty cans, irritating owner and often resulting in the loss of access to the property.

Thats pretty good.

Add "abercrombies" ,"sallys" and "fugtards" to that list and you've got a good start.

I see plenty of this breed of Curr while down at the unnamed lake region.

I've got a couple of 100 count bags on the way.

I also orded some "Hoo Daddy's". Anyone use them before?
There's bass in Iowa? I thought all the state had were bullheads.

I did see a guy with 2 35lb+ flatheads saturday.

There are several really good crappy and bass lakes in Iowania. I prefer farm ponds though, and am in search of the elusive 8lb bucketmouth.

That'd probably be where you'd find it. Everywhere else gets too much pressure doesn't it?

Classic!

I was fly fishing with a friend of mine 3 weeks ago on the Stillwater river way the hell up in the mountains when we had an "interesting" experience.

We went up river about a a mile and were fishing the far side of an island completely surrounded by water slaying the rainbows when there was a noise in the bushes about 30 feet away. I was thinking deer, but knew there was a chance that a bear could have made it out there as well. I slowly removed my .454 Casull from the holster and stood there until I could figure out what in the hell was making all that noise.

Much to my surprise, it was some long haired Hippy "crawling" around through the bushes. He looked at me and saw I had the Casull out of the holster and froze with a deer in the headlight look on his face.
I reholstered the pistol and told him that it's not wise to sneak up on people in bear country. The dim bulb just keeps looking at me with the same stupid look on his face.

I asked him "what is it we can do for you?" He comes back with, "I am just out for a walk." I explained to the strokestick that he was spooking the fish (he had some bright red whore house looking shirt on) and asked him to move on. Without a word he hooks it back across the river and vanishes. I went to the top of the hill to keep an eye on him because I knew the only place for him to park was next to my Jeep.

Sure enough, the freak starts walking around my jeep looking in my windows. I had to walk all the way back over there to see what the hell he was doing, so by the time I got over there, I was pissed off that this tool was cutting into my fishing time. I asked him "What in the fuck are you doing hanging out around my Jeep?" He claimed he wasn't. I told the slippery cockroach that I had been watching him and once again he didn't say a word. I explained to him that I thought it would be best if he moved on down the road.....NOW or he was going to have a bad day. He did, and I went back and caught more fish.

Going to have...a bad day

Thats funny....I've used that same line for a long time.

I just got an email from my brother (I think you met him bwana..not the one in Iraq)...He, his 5 year old boy and a friend had gone fishing last weekend. He and my nephew had caught and skinned 14 on their "man-time"....then gone back with his buddy to an overstocked pond, and I suppose there are 20 bass on the stringer they're holding........Then they hit a lake that has a PLETHORA of Crappy and filled a bucket.

mean time..........I'm 150 miles away, raining outside working on honey-dos.

I really need to get out that way and get some of that Mountain Trout action....before I'm old and dead.

I'm adding that to my list, right next to alaska to catch the salmon run and tag a bear with my bow.

That sounds like a good plan, but while in AK, be sure to hit Homer for some Halibut fishing as well. Before you go email me and I will give you the name of a top notch captain up there.

I've got a really good buddy who is a marine Recon instructor up there....he said he could hook me up. I know he halibut fishes and had days when he litterally hits the salmon run, goes to work, then climbs in a tree after bearzilla.

I'm probably a few years away from that being a reality too. I've started saving, but I need to quit finding places to spend it.
