Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

That deal is a ****ing joke.
Keep in mind NO ONE wanted him only 1 year ago...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'll give it a chance before I completely dismiss it.

If they made this trade with Romeo and ***** on board, I'm taking this differently.

From the news I've gathered, the Chiefs are comfortable letting Smith play these 2 years out. If year one goes extremely well, they will likely approach him about an extension.

They are also going to be looking to upgrade at TE and shift Moeaki into more of Delanie Walker role. If Finley gets cut, he's a definite target.
Good info there guy. Smith's contract is very reasonable. He's also been good about the structure of his contracts. Smith negociates his contracts with confidence, and he isn't afraid to give teams ways to get out if they so choose.

Three or four years ago having a first round QB contract and an 8 mil back up would cripple a team finantially. Since the new CBA, It is pretty affordable to keep a first rounder on the bench for a couple of years to develop while a vet holds down the fort. I think at this point in alex's career he helps the search for a franchise quarterback rather than hurts it.

I see absolutely no indication they'll go QB in the 1st...

Got my bi-weekly call from the Chiefs today asking if I had decided to buy the set of tickets I intended to purchase. I told Ray that he may as well take my info out of their computer because I have no intentions of buying anything to do with the team since it's evident they have no intention to draft our leader and are still satisfied with backup quarterbacks and nothing has changed.

I told him that I will keep the money available for them if they just view Alex as a stopgap and draft a quarterback.

I was a bit taken back when he openly told me that's not the first time he'd heard that today.

I doubt the trade sold many tickets.

I kind of feel for the folks makeing these calls. How much vitriol is being sent thier way just because they are the only contact fans have with the team?

Teams stated last year they were interested but all knew that the 49ers were keeping alex because of the uncertainity of rookie Colin kaepernick and the immaturity he had showed preseason of 11'... Does anyone here watcha nything other than our team?. Alex clearly knew he wasnt leaving SF and had no desire to leave he said that multiple times. Once he was sidelined however and kept on the sideline all of that changed..

I honestly think people are underestimating the monkey alex has on his back and the fire he will have next year to prove SF and anyone else wrong about him.. He just came off a 20-5 record the last 2 seasons and a nfc champ game apperance.. I dont think hes gonna let us down. 8 wins and above next year is a good sign for our franchise and if peyton gets hurt, we may only need 9 wins for our division lol.

I talked last night with a guy I know inside the Chiefs. He gave me some of his insights. Here are highlights:

I was assured last night to just wait. They haven't announced all the comp yet, But there were other teams willing to trade for Alex Smith. Said he expects the 49ers also gave up a mid round pick this year as well.

Credited new FO and Clark with implementing a plan. Believes that plan is a vet and draft pick. Believed Eagles were a team the Chiefs were still in touch with. Clark is way more involved this year. Wants to bring winning back to KC and has made clear to everyone that is his priority. Chiefs had to get in 2nd rd to get their guy, but believe they can get the most from Alex Smith. He was the best vet coming avail. They do still want to draft a QB. But rather he sit and learn, develop more. Chiefs liked the way Smith helped mentor Kaepernick, and credited Smith with helping him read and look at defenses. Had the best mental approach to the game out of anyone coming available. The Chiefs knew they needed that and went out and got him.

On the draft, Chiefs were excited about their picks, and would be looking to acquire more. Thinks Chiefs are also really high on the OL in this draft, and have spent a lot of time looking around Luke Joeckel. He said he had no idea who they would decide though, but they think they get a "difference maker". Nothing about Geno...and I asked, but did say they were very thorough, and have spent a lot of time looking very long and hard at all the QB's. The Alex Smith trade shows they will go after who they think will help them, and if it is Geno, then they would get him.

The Chiefs were the last team to leave each day of the drills, and also spent more time than any other team looking at the D backs. Reid is very hands on with the scouts, likes to scout with them so they are all on the same page.

He said he believes they are talking to more than one team and he wouldn't be surprised if they were able to trade back.

That was the thick of it. It made me feel a little better so I thought I'd share.

That makes complete sense. Kaep in 11' looked like complete trash but after more time behind Smith and then alex helping him on the sidelines in 12' you could see kaepernick really started to shine.

Thanks for sharing. It worries me that they are really high on OL. We dont need any OL unless Albert is gone. It also sounds to me like they are going to trade down and Geno is out for good..... More like grabbing a QB in the 3rd round after all the good ones are gone.

And if they traded two 2nds for a mentor, then they are dumber than I thought.

he didnt visit with half a dozen teams actually only 1. he had a scheduled visit to seattle and miami. He went to Miami first which is where the HC went on record saying it takes 2 sides to tango, and alex never went to seattle because he signed the 49ers contract once his agent contacted him about it on his way back to his house. Google is your friend.
