Electronics smart phones

I think I'm in going to be in the market for a smart phone. I have always used a Trac-Phone for traveling/emergencies but never had more because cell phones have never and still don't work at my house and my job I just retired from didn't require one. All I want is something simple, fairly easy to use and cheap, hopefully both the phone and plan. The missus wants a larger screen for easier texting. Enlighten me please as I stand before the all knowing altar of CP technical wisdom.

Screw ATT and Verizon. I went went with Straight Talk, `66% less and have has NO problems.

$40 for unl. call/text and 2gb data. 8gb up front. All I need.
