Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

I cannot imagine a scenario in which Andy Reid and John Dorsey stand behind a QB that continually puts up sub-50 QB ratings and leads this team into the dirt. I can't.
And the backup plan for this year when Smith goes down with yet another injury? It's Daniel? Seriously?

Gross incompetence in shoring up the QB position at this point, with a final grade to be determined by next weekend.

Of course he did! The man was beat out by Steve DeBerg (among others). He grew exponentially under Bill Walsh.

I disagree. With the WCO, you need an accurate, smart QB that can read defenses and distribute the ball. You don't need a guy that throws for 350 yards a week in order to win.

Yes, but not AFTER the age of 30.

Steve Young was playing at a high level for the 49ers WELL BEFORE then.

When you face guys who throw for 350 yards, you might.

Now guess how many 300-yard games Joe Flacco had last year: hint, more than Alex Smith's ENTIRE CAREER.

We are at a huge disadvantage if Alex Smith doesn't make a huge leap forward.

So, you're convinced that Chase Daniel isn't an adequate NFL backup? The guy just spent four years as an understudy to Drew Brees and was coached by Sean Payton.

He's crap? Really?

So, who should the Chiefs have signed this offseason? Kolb? Fitzpatrick? Who?

And why in the ****ing world do you believe that any of the draft eligible QB's are worth a ****ing shit? Because it's a "lottery" and someone just has to be good?

I think he's not making a ton by NFL standards, and the Saints allowed him to leave. Speaks pretty loudly.

As for options, I'm just fine with acquiring Smith, but not at the price the Chiefs surrendered. And not without acquiring a legit QBOTF, which Daniel is not.

At least Alex has won a playoff game. That's at least better than giving up a 2nd for Matty boy who won 11 games with the greatest offense ever and didn't make the playoffs.

Steve Young was an amazing athlete long before he became an amazing QB. He became a great QB under Walsh (and later, Seifert) but it definitely took time.

That's true. Although if the defense doesn't shit the bed, those games should be infrequent.

I don't anyone is comparing Flacco's game to Smith's game. If they are, that's just plain dumb.

I think the Chiefs are at a huge disadvantage if Alex Smith doesn't play to the level he's displayed the past two seasons. I don't think he has to make a huge leap forward nearly as much as he needs to remain consistent.

With traditional WCO principles, yes.

I'd argue that both McCarthy and Reid's version requires much more 3/4vert concepts than most. Additionally, McCarthy's incorporates a ton of back-shoulder/stop fade throws that are 10-20yds down the field. Hitting those from either the center or far hash requires some solid arm strength and anticipation/timing.

Now, I don't think the last part is going to be a part of our offense. I do think as far as comparisons go, Reid's WCO (typically) uses a lot more 3/4vert concepts than say, Heckert's or even Holmgren. I do think that this will probably be adjusted for Smith and anticipate that there will be some changes on progressions (For example, in a trips RT set with the PC being a 3Verts concept, Alex Smith's 1 is going to be the X on the left and the 2 (which could/probably will be a hot adjust) will be Fasano/Moeaki on the cross (not quite a skinny post, think same route depth but not as hard of a break).

It would require me to go through a lot of film from Alex and a lot from Reid (to compare how PCs changed with different QBs, as Kolb might be more physically comparable to Alex) to really get a solid idea on how route designs, personnel groupings, and playcalling would change.

From what I've heard, they encouraged it. They wanted him to try and get a chance to start somewhere.

Is it?

So if we play the Ravens, and Flacco throws for 350 yards, we should be satisfied with Alex Smith throwing for 200?

Because the reason the Ravens won the SB is because Flacco threw for 331 yards in a playoff game.

Personally, I like seeing unknowns play. While not a Chase fan, if he gets a chance to start at some point, I'm going to enjoy seeing it.

Agree with that. The "unknown" always provides a bit of optimism.
