Turned out that the niners were apparently in the Manning race and stalling (possibly both the niners and Condon) on closing the deal with Smith. Not Smith holding out for more money. That's when Smith took a trip out to Miami to see what interest the Dolphins had. Soon after, Peyton selected the Broncos and the deal between Smith and the Niners was finalized. But again, that's all behind closed doors stuff. And no one really knows what happened for sure.
What I heard was that the Niners wanted Manning at big deal and Smith as backup (low base and incentives) or Smith as starter if no Manning. How? Put a lowball offer on the table, structured in a way that if Manning came the only way to get the 8M was by incentives. The hope was that he'd sign and they'd get Manning. The expectation was to get either or. Either way, they could say the offer is on the table and the overall numbers look the same as released.

When Manning passed, the 8M deal (first year) became guaranteed. Alex's agent put the language in there that if on the roster on April 1 the following years, it would become guaranteed that year - basically a "start me or release me." (Too much to backup.) Smith said the hangup was structure not amount.

The original contract would have allowed them to realistically keep him as backup, with a lot of incentives - yes, the Niners knew he wasn't going to sign that and so did his agent - how? He has the same agent for Peyton Manning. Agent also wanted Manning to go elsewhere because Manning was getting max either way and the team that would pay the most, was the Niners.

Still think it's odd Smith stuck with Condon after he pretty much publicly undermined him by promoting Manning to the 49ers.

Back in January, I know that #chiefs QB Alex Smith wanted a deal above Jay Cutler (7 yr, $126M). I can't imagine that has changed.

fyi...

New starters at both T spots, G, FS, ILB, etc.

On top of that we believe the least productive group of WR's in the league is "good enough."

Look at it this way - we play all 4 championship teams from last year and even though we didn't win a playoff game we think our depth is good enough to beat any of these teams?...
REP! Hope Cosmo sees this... Exactly the case - just too many issues for them all to work out successfully. Furthermore, the Chiefs have created more holes than existed at season's end. This is not what a team does that wants to capitalize on any type of momentum gained from success the previous season. There were always 2 plans - last year was "WIN NOW" & get the fans back and this year its "rebuild" but lets NOT actually say it and try to remain competitive in the process.

I have no problem with making Smith play next season on his existing contract. If he performs well with our schedule then he will earn every penny he gets.

My post was more of a bad checkdown joke in an Alex Smith discussion, but I doubt many professional athletes want their wives responding to outrageous media claims about them via social media.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Who cares if he signs this year or not?

If we want him for the next two seasons we can have him for probably around $11-$12 million by just franchising him. The next three seasons for something a bit more.

Of course that presupposes there is nothing in his deal that prevents us from franchising him and/or that I know how to do simple math.

Bolded the important parts.

Top 5 QB Salaries / 5 = > $12 million by roughly 50%.
