It doesn't happen often but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Alex Smith is a average/to above average NFL QB. He's exactly what you said. An efficient game manager.

but we've been down that road. Time to take a franchise QB at #1 and see what happens. If they want to give the 49ers a 4th for Alex Smith and take Geno at 1.1 then I'm more than ok with that.

But Smith and Joeckel? We better go 12-4, win at least 1 playoff game, and see Alex Smith have a career year and not just a stat wise career year.

Alex Smith is largely irrelevant if they draft Geno or Barkley 1.1.

I'm fine with Alex Smith in red and gold.... as long as Geno Smith is also.

We have to have a #2. And Alex Smith is a lot more interesting to me in that capacity than anyone else currently on roster.

I agree with this. Alex Smith played horribly, especially down the stretch and in OT, against the Giants. I knew that game would come down to who made the first mistake because Alex couldn't move the chains or make the big throw and Eli was getting crushed/hit on every single drop back.

Alex Smith can very easily be what Trent Green was here in KC. That's his ceiling.

That's a ceiling I don't want. I'd rather have a guy with an Aaron Rodgers ceiling (Geno).
