Massive explosion at Texas Fertilizer Plant

This apparently has just happened in the last hour... but a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas... near Waco, has exploded. Apparently it was felt up to 60 miles away. Some of the pictures rolling in on Twitter are insane. Looks like a volcano. Sounds like multiple buildings leveled, on fire, etc.

The OKC bomb was ammonium nitrate which is not available any longer. Yes. Grain dust goes boom if it is atomized in an enclosed area.

That's why they're evacuating. Anhydrous ammonia is mean shit. I don't even like to put it in the ground. Hate it. Meth dealers though, they're not ****ing scared.
Well color me a dumbass. Apparently there was a bunch of ammonium nitrate there. I read that they refine it as an explosive for mining operations. I thought they had it off the market completely. That's probably what makes the big boom.

Stupid

What ****ing morons allowed the equivalent to a bomb factory to be in that location? Within a radius of about a 1/4 mile there is a hospital, a nursing home, a middle school, a high school, a good chunk of a least one neighborhood, and from the earlier picture maybe an apartment complex. Staggeringly giant amount of stupid.

They're worried about Anhydrous Ammonia in the air. That shit is ****ing mean. It takes a ****ass load of water to neutralize. Basically, it sucks all the water out of your body. The most vulnerable tissues are eyes and lungs. It's basically a terrible, awful way to die.

I don't know how one would handle a rupture in a very large tank. Out here, you just get the **** upwind and let it dissipate in the wind, but that is a far smaller volume than a bulk tank. That's scary shit.

There isn't any place in town that ISN'T close to those things.

There is massive risk with any industrial area. That's why the people that can afford it, don't live by industry.

The houses and plant have probably been there for years and years....

A guy from Agtalk said it's been there for at least 30 years. If it is just a retailer, those are ****ing EVERYWHERE.

Years ago I had a hitch break when fertilizing. The quick-detach hose didn't release, instead the line broke.

I did what my dad told me to do if that ever happened. I watched a 1/4 full tank spray into the wind. Ouch.

Buehler, am I right by thinking that 55,000 pounds of AA isn't a lot?

Hell, we have more than that sitting in the middle of nowhere around where my parents farm.

Alright. I'll defer to y'all. I know diddly about fertilizer other than making my plants grow and seeing shit blown up from it. Still seems like a unnecessary risk.
