"I believe Gunther Cunningham will change the way we play football." - Carl Peterson

"Please, just make us respectable. I don't care if we're in the top 10 in defense or the top 15. I mean, that would be nice. But just make us respectable. Just give us a chance." - Carl Peterson, after re-hiring Gunther Cunningham

"Even the word 'respectable' makes me sick to my stomach," he says. "We're not coming to be 'respectable.' We're coming to take your heart." - Gunther Cunningham

"There are only two rules to my defense. Run downhill, and show up. That's what I tell our guys. Run at the offense and show up around the ball. Do those two things, we'll be a good defense. Don't do them, you won't be playing here." - Gunther Cunningham

"Our linebackers are going to run to the ball. We've got speed there. Scott (Fujita) can really run. And you know me. We're going to blitz. We're not going to back down when we're in trouble. My approach has always been the tougher things get, the more you attack." - Gunther Cunningham

I don't know how this man has a job. He is basically stealing money from this franchise right now. Not to mention all the free agents and draft picks he lobbied for, many publicly, and got. Kendrell Bell, for instance, is all Gun. If he were a man he would resign today as he is bringing new meaning to embarrassment to this franchise. If he wanted to get revenge on the Chiefs for firing him, he's done it. Carl Peterson, for all the mistakes he has made, has made two huge blunders in his Chiefs career which should finally cost him his job, and both involve hiring Cunningham. And Herm Edwards should be fired for keeping this guy as his DC...

Great find. And it's just not this year. Gun has had two seasons where we have had the WORST defense in the league, and two season where we've been only "bad".

Gun is a motivator, nothing more. Without someone leading him by the hand with the Xs and Os, Gun is a disaster. Obviously, Vermeil admitted he knew very little about defense, and couldn't help Gunther. Herm was supposed to be a defensive coach, but it's clear he also knows nothing. There are absolutely no brains on the D side of the ball -- just a preacher and an F-bomb machine.

He is running a scheme now that totally disregards that philosophy, Cover-Who defense involves rushing 4 down linemen and dropping LB's into covg.

Great point. And the fact is, we've hired a head coach who has never been able to put a great staff of assistants together either here or in New York, and a defensive coordinator who also has never been able to surround himself with good assistants, either as head coach or DC. The only time he's been any good was with Marty handing him over a defense with great players and good assistants and a team which was already ingrained with Marty's hard-nosed mentality. All Herm and his coaches have brought here is softness...

Yeah, and it explains why Belichick considered hiring Gun. Belichick is a D mastermind, but let's face it, not much of a traditional football "motivator", and that is what Gun could have brought to table.

Gun without that mentoring is simply a disaster.
