Chargers report card: at Kansas City
Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa issues his grades for Saturday’s 30-13 Chargers loss at Kansas City in a game that likely decided the AFC West: Quarterback: F Philip Rivers never has looked worse. He found initial problems, getting sacked twice and throwing for just 109 yards in the first half. He did throw for 88 on the first second-half scoring drive — and then three three bad picks on his final 12 attempts that sealed it. He and his team screwed up. Chiefs didn’t. Blew a must-win. A sloppy, terrible defeat. Running backs: D Austin Ekeler’s fumble basically removed chances of a win. Backup fumblers don’t play much, rook. Melvin Gordon ran tough, scoring the first TD to make it close, and had a big 49-yard catch and run. Receivers: C Antonio Gates caught his 113th TD. Hunter Henry had a few moments, then, like many teammates, went off hurt. Keenan Allen, strangely, was not much of a factor and was carted off late. Carts. Not good. Offensive line: C+ Rivers was sacked twice, but line didn’t lose this. Dan Feeney had a take-down hold and then allowed a big sack that ruined a drive. Russell Okung limped off in the third quarter. Joe “Turnstile” Barksdale went down (again), then returned, then went down again. Defensive line: F Manhandled. There basically was zero pass rush. Melvin Ingram got a hand on a pass, then a sack, then a nifty offside. He played well early. Joey Bosa made no difference. Brandon Mebane got hurt. Damien Square got his hand and helmet on a pass. Linebackers: F Tackling (by all) was terrible after it appeared the problem had been solved. Is Kareem Hunt Jim Brown? He ran for 155. An unexceptional group wasn’t helped when Denzel Perryman went down (and out) near the end of the half with a hamstring. Jatavis Brown had a rather large offside on third down, then got hurt. Secondary: D- Not their finest first half-hour, allowing Alex Smith to go John Elway in the first half (182 yards). Casey Hayward, obviously not 100 percent with a bad calf, got no help on long TD pass to Tyreek Hill. DBs led the way in early tackles. Meaning: Front 7 didn’t do its job. Special teams: D- Latest (and maybe not the last) kicker, Travis Koons, missed a makeable PAT by plenty. Blew a great early chance to recover a mangled punt near Chiefs’ goal. Lucky with a penalty on a long kickoff return. Coaching: F Anthony Lynn cooked up a mess pie in his first big game. Had a crazy defensive scheme on third-and-21 that led to a FG. Chiefs seemed to be into Gus Bradley’s defensive playbook. Ken Whisenhunt made some offensive adjustments at the break. Not enough. Next opportunity (at New York Jets): B The J-E-T-S Jets have outplayed their preseason advertisements — by plenty — but if Judases don’t tank, N.Y. isn’t winning. |

Absolutely. Day-to-day with our boys in red. No doubt. Still, stomping a division rival at a raucous Arrowhead is always a joy. And seeing the Phillip "Rivers of Tears" is priceless.

Why would the San Diego paper waste ink covering a team that abandoned their city?

So don't you DARE demean Alex by comparing him to an overrated whiny coach's kid who cheated and cried for his entire career.
