Andy Reid brings detail to Kansas City

Nice little article about Reid's "live" practices.

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post...to-kansas-city

Quote:
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking training camp in the Andy Reid era for the first time.

The team had their last practice of camp Wednesday. After a planned walk-through on Thursday, they'll head back to Kansas City to prepare for the regular season.

I got a chance to chat with Pro Bowl linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali before camp broke. The two stars are like virtually every other player on this roster – they rave about playing under Reid.

“I know spirits are high in 31 other places, but we feel great,” Johnson said. “It was a great camp. Great.”

Both veterans pointed out details of Reid’s camp that stood out to them. Johnson said he was amazed that Reid, who came to Kansas City after 14 years in Philadelphia, had the team practice “live” so extensively every day. Often, teams scrimmage near the goal line.

While practice was controlled, Reid wanted his players to simulate game action every day in many different situations. It worked. Several players thought the preseason opener at New Orleans on Friday was slower than usual because they were used to the pace.

“It just puts you in better position to make plays,” Johnson said. “It’s invaluable.”

Hali was impressed by Reid’s schedule. The team had the same routine every day: Practice started at 8:15 a.m., and then players would hit the classroom later in the day. Many NFL teams rotate the daily schedule.

“It gave you a chance to correct your mistakes easier,” Hali said. “It was great to go back and see what we did wrong and then the next day on the field, improve from it … It meant we made less mistakes throughout camp. It’s just the little things that coach Reid does that has made us a better team.”

So much for "only discussing football"!

Everyone wants that, but the reality is that there can only be 5 top 5 QBs in a league of 32 teams. Simple math. It is hard to find that top 5 QB, but Alex Smith can be a good, possibly top 10 QB, so why not hope for him to do well while we wait for that elusive top 5? Why does it have to be all or nothing? This is what I don't understand about you guys. If you don't get your top 5 (like 27 teams won't) you just want the team and the coach to fail completely. Stupid, stupid shit.

You can't just buy a top 5 QB.

Understood, but that's not the problem.

If we had the 3rd pick in the draft 2 years ago this team wouldn't move up 1 spot for Luck/RGIII.

I have no faith, in any draft, for any (QB) player, this team will ever target a franchise QB and do what's necessary to get him if it requires moving up or taking a risk of any kind...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

1. I don't recall ever wishing the team to fail... only believing that they will fail.
2. It is hard to find a top 5 qb. It is even harder to find a top 5 qb when your coach is in love with his current (not top 5) qb and your GM wastes valuable draft picks, including future picks, on someone who obviously isn't a top 5 qb.

Oh, I imagine all Chiefs fans do want a once-in-a-generation player. The difference between me and others is the level of satisfaction/ happiness in paying through the nose for a guy who obviously isn't a once-in-a-generation player but will be here for a minimum of three years wasting everyone's time.

Dude one in a generation. Is 1 person in at time from of 30 to 35 years or a lifetime.

So if the Chiefs can't have that option then they shouldn't even play. Players shouldn't want to play for the other 25 teams that doesn't have this once in a generation QB. Get ****ing real with your expectations.

What?! RG3 is not a once in a generation player. And his unique skill set is already having to be curtailed his second year in the league to keep him healthy.

Let's let him play in the league more than one year before we proclaim him a once in 10 years type of player.

Don't get me wrong, he is a good young QB with a lot of promise. I just don't think he's GREAT yet. I'ld still choose Luck over him every day.
