Well, it's not like they came up with the name last week. And do you really think it was intended as a slur when it was first used? Do you think the original owner named his team after a race of people he despised for the sole purpose of denegrading them? No way.

So you admit that context matters. Now, again, explain to me how being used in an exalted fashion as the name of a professional football team makes "redskin" a slur.

..it orignated in Europe in the 1500's with the Beothuks from Newfoundland who painted themselves with red ochre..it was a sign of tribal IDENTITY..the absence of red ochre was considered a form of punishment.

Later, in America, it was used to replace the term scalps.

You understand that you don't decide feelings, right?

You can react to your feelings, and channel them properly and deal with them as best as you can. But you can't decide what your feelings are.
Did you describe someone as a "black man"? OMG! Should I report your racism?

The entire reason for the word's existence was derogatory, was it not?

Which is why some people think using the word is racially insensitive, in a country where racial sensitivity is not exactly a bright spot of our history.

Well, I'll defer back to my last reply to you. It seems like you're working your way through the conversation right now, trying to catch up.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'm saying I can't think of a single way.

If that's the case, then maybe a sports team's name isn't the magical oasis of racial imperviousness that you thought it was.
I invite you to read Baby Lee's post immediately preceding yours.

Your last reply doesn't really explain why a non-derogatory use of a term should be considered a slur just because the term can be used in another context as a slur.

You're right. It wasn't coined last week. It was coined decades ago. Hell, it was coined decades before people started having a serious conversation about race in this country.

It makes no sense to keep it. It doesn't belong in 2013.

What's the big deal with keeping the name? Why is it so goddamn important?

The Cleveland Browns became the Baltimore Ravens. The Houston Oilers became the Tennessee Titans. The Seattle Sonics became the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Long-time logos and brands get changed all the freakin time.

The sophistry taking place is stupid. I get the argument. I've seen it a thousand times on this thread and others like it. "Well, see, it's a bad thing to name your football team these days, but over the years it's acquired it's own meaning just to refer to the football team such that Redskin is now something people call a football player from Washington, so..."

No. That's a shitty reason for keeping the team name.

Give me a good reason for keeping Redskins.
