Runyan Update

Runyan back in the picture?
11:42
AM ETJon Runyan | Eagles | Interested: Packers?, Bills?, Eagles?, Chiefs? Top Email According to what we read from the Philadelphia Inquirer last week, Jon Runyan's career in Philly is not likely to be rekindled this season.

On the other hand, injuries around the league could force some different interested parties to take another look at the veteran.

The Green Bay Packers have had some issues with their line play through two weeks, and they may be losing Chad Clifton for an extended period of time.

In addition, the Buffalo Bills lost right tackle Brad Butler for the season after he was injured during Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Bills had previously given Runyan a tryout. Bills head coach Dick Jauron told the Buffalo News that the team's player personnel folks will be meeting this week to "go over the possibilities" available, and Runyan is believed to be at the top of the list.

....In other news..

Chiefs going after Shanny?
10:55
AM ETKansas City Chiefs Top Email With a $60 million man under center for the Kansas City Chiefs, there's a thought that perhaps a veteran head coach with a knack for developing young QBs should be brought in to replace head coach Todd Haley.

So will Mike Shanahan be patrolling the sidelines at Arrowhead next season for the home team?

Not a chance, notes NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Chiefs had their opportunity to grab Shanny this offseason and went another direction, and while the current braintrust of GM Scott Pioli and Haley continues to rebuild a roster through massive cuts, their jobs are likely safe through next season to see how the team can compete once the Pioli-Haley system is fully in place.

(Anyone else think Adam Schefter is a dumbass. I mean this is kind of a moot point arcticle. Of course Haley and Pioli's jobs are safe for next season. Seriously. What an idiot. Anyway, I thought it was kinda funny how much of a clue this guy doesen't have.)

Belichick vs. Vrabel?
10:45
AM ETMike Vrabel | Chiefs Top Email Months later, we might have a clue as to why the New England Patriots threw Mike Vrabel in with the Matt Cassel trade.

The Providence Journal notes that during Bill Belichick's press conference on Monday, he addressed the communications taking place against the New York Jets on Sunday, when Gary Guyton wore the in-helmet radio for the defense, a device that Vrabel wore in 2008. "I would say [the communication is] probably better than it was last year, that wouldn't take much. Is it as good as it needs to be? No. There's always room for improvement. But I would say it's definitely improved over last year, not that that was a real high bar."

Must be that Vrabel was a Scott Pioli guy and not a Belichick guy after all.
(Interesting take here IMO.)

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/features/rumors

Anyway take all this for what it's worth but I found some of it interesting I guess.

Well maybe that explains why Verbel totally ****ed up downing the punt inside the 1 during the Raider game. The damn thing could have been going off in his ear or something...

Bills pluck a player from the Packers' practice squad
Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2009 4:47 PM ET

With Buffalo Bills right tackle Brad Butler out for the season, the Bills needed to add a body to take his place on the active roster.

In such situations, teams often turn to the practice squad. Their own practice squad, not the practice squad of another team.

But the Bills have announced the acquisition of offensive lineman Jamon Meredith from the Green Bay practice squad. Meredith was a fifth-round pick of the Packers in the 2009 draft, and he has experience playing guard and tackle.

Teams may sign at will a player from another team's practice squad. It's unknown whether the Packers, whose offensive line has struggled through the first two games, offered Meredith a spot on the Green Bay active roster in an effort to keep him.

They didn't exactly cut him, they waived him. I think that it is understood that most guys you waive will make it to your practice squad unless another team is seriously in need for help.

Funny thing is though that not only did he not make the team and wound up on the practice squad, but apparently the Packers, who are having some troubles at RT themselves right now, didn't see any reason to offer him a contract to try and retain him. I guess they could have tried and he declined it, but I dunno, he'd have just as much a shot in Green Bay.
