There is this thing called the franchise tag. It would take a criminally insane act not to have Houston on the roster next year.

Based on my rankings below, I can now group them by position and see where the need is. Our goal will be to increase the starting positions and also to replace guys who are ranked probably 40 or lower.
Let's look at the backfield first. Running backs 25 Charles, Jamaal RB 27 7 Texas 1 13 Thomas, De'Anthony RB/ST 21 0 Oregon 5 42 Sherman, Anthony RB 26 3 Connecticut 17 34 Davis, Knile RB 23 2 Arkansas 19 32 Gray, Cyrus RB 25 2 Texas A&M 27 22 McKnight, Joe RB 26 3 USC 38 35 West, Charcandrick RB 23 0 Abilene Christian 57 Clearly stacked here, and a lot of these guys contribute on special teams. No action needed. Quarterback 11 Smith, Alex QB 30 8 Utah 15 7 Murray, Aaron QB 24 0 Georgia 48 10 Daniel, Chase QB 28 6 Missouri 49 9 Bray, Tyler QB 22 0 Tennessee 50 You may not like Smith ranked as high as 15, but it's going to be hard to find a better short-term option unless one of the backups blossom. Our backups are all replaceable, so let the three of them duke it out for a backup spot. I'll repeat that I recognize that we need a franchise quarterback, but I doubt that it'll happen this year, so I'm presuming no action.

Now let's look at the receivers.
Wide receivers 82 Bowe, Dwayne WR 30 8 LSU 12 12 Wilson, Albert WR 22 0 Georgia State 14 88 Hemingway, Junior WR 25 1 Michigan 29 81 Avant, Jason WR 31 9 Michigan 43 85 Hammond, Frankie WR 24 R Florida 45 15 Jenkins, A.J. WR 25 2 Illinois 59 17 Avery, Donnie WR 30 7 Houston 61 This is a weird group to rank. Maybe I'm being too hard on Avery and Jenkins, but I'd rather have the other guys on the roster over them next year just from a youth and potential perspective. If you look at the rankings here, we have to keep Bowe. There's no choice. I rank Albert Wilson high on potential and give Hemingway a bump to the middle ranks based on special teams. But without Bowe we have one small second-year player and that's it. So WR is a very high priority in the offseason even if Alex doesn't throw to them. Tight End 87 Kelce, Travis TE 25 R Cincinnati 6 80 Fasano, Anthony TE 30 9 Notre Dame 30 84 Harris, Demetrius TE R UW-Milwaukee 35 89 Gordon, Richard TE 27 3 Miami (Fla.) 63 Kelce's the rising young star and Fasano is a middle of the pack veteran. Harris gets points for being young and I have no idea who Gordon is. But it seems like we've got youth and depth here, so no action needed.

I'd be okay with that. It would be a good value pick.

Ask Carolina if they would trade Kelvin Benjamin for Dee Ford............nevermind.
We need a receiver and some depth on the offensive line. We don't have a lot of money, if I'm not mistaken, so we'll have to address these needs in the draft. We're not getting another QB after giving Smith that big contract. Sad fact, but it's a fact. Reid is also not going anywhere. |

Looking at that list I just realized how truly disappointing the Vance Walker signing has been.

Now let's look at the offensive line.
Offensive tackle 72 Fisher, Eric OT 23 1 Central Michigan 11 68 Harris, Ryan T 29 6 Notre Dame 37 79 Stephenson, Donald OL 26 2 Oklahoma 47 I rank Fisher high based on potential, and Harris was a middle of the pack roster guy. I liked him more than expected, and liked Stephenson less than expected. We need an upgrade at RT, but it's not the highest priority. 73 Fulton, Zach OG 23 0 Tennessee 18 71 Allen, Jeff OL 24 2 Illinois 24 76 Duvernay-Tardif, Laurent OT 23 0 McGill (Canada) 32 74 Linkenbach, Jeffrey G 27 5 Cincinnati 56 75 McGlynn, Mike G 29 7 Pittsburgh 58 I know we're unhappy with left guard, but I think Allen will come back next year or the Tardis will step up. I don't think we're drafting one, or at least not high. 61 Hudson, Rodney C 25 3 Florida State 8 64 Kush, Eric OL 25 R California (Pa.) 46 Fine here. No need to replace Kush if he never plays anyway.

I would address the Oline and WR. CB and S are second for draft position or FA. I personally would walk away from Alex Smith, though not realistic, that man doesn't deserve 26 million or whatever hed be guaranteed if he's still on the roster.
