Free agency has already begun?

POSTED 10:59 a.m. EST, February 24, 2007

DIELMAN, STEINBACH HAVE DEALS IN HAND?

Our sources in Indy tell us that two of the top offensive linemen in free agency might already have deals in place with new teams.

If their agents are to be believed.

Per the source, the agents for Bengals lineman Eric Steinbach and Chargers lineman Kris Dielman are telling people that they plan to sign contracts worth $7 million per year on March 2, or shortly thereafter.

The three teams who were thought to be most interested in either of these two guys are the Texans, Browns, and Cowboys.

Though it wouldn't be much of a surprise to learn that contracts have been verbally negotiated before the start of free agency (since it happens every single year), the other possibility is that the agents are puffing as to either or both of these players, in the hopes that someone else will offer as much or more.

Either way, make no mistake about it -- free agency officially begins in six days; unofficially, it's already started.

I just don't think free agency is terribly deep this year. I'm afraid the Chiefs won't be able to make much of a dent in their holes because the available talent's going to get overpaid from the hypercompetition for them.

Hopefully I'm wrong about that.

I'm still optimistic about us picking up a vet, but if history is any indication, it's going to be a once-great guy who's got a couple years left in him, like Donnie Edwards.

I don't know.

eh, anyone with ANY hint of realism knew that stuff happens all the time anyway-- it's illegal and ridiculous, but it's the business of sports (sometimes)--if you ain't cheatin', you ain't winning (*see also: 1997 and 1998 super bowl** winning Denver Broncos)

** Denotes penalized cheaters, Denver Broncos, who were caught cheating the salary cap and wearing crisco: they were fined only a third round draft pick however.

I don't think either of those guys will be signing with the Chiefs on March 2nd. Carl's vacation starts on March 1st.

I think Hutchinson's deal last year probably averaged $7 mil per year. Steinbach and Dielman are supposedly in Hutchinson's class and it's a year later with a larger salary cap.

Yeah, and how did Hutchinson do with the Vikings? Individually he may have done well, but the Vikings paid him $7 Mil and I bet they are kicking themselves because they didn't do anything.

It's all part of the "building a championship team" process. They already have their defense in place. It's one less draft pick they have to waste on a OG. If they can come up with a QB and WR, they will have all the pieces. And I'm sure they still have more cap room available than the Chiefs.

The process makes sense, but they could have got a good enough Guard for way less than $7 Mil per year.

I'd never pick a Guard in the first round and I'd never pay one that much money either...you strap yourself at other positions when if you look around the league there's alot of ok Guards that get the job done just fine.

Good.

Just build through the draft, so that when the Cheifs get a real coach they'l be ready to compete.
