I went for my annual physical the last week of April and my blood pressure was the highest it's ever been and my cholesterol jumped 25 points over the previous year.

My doc has his nutritionist call me and we walked through what I was doing and she told me to try going the paleo route. I always thought that the low carb Nazis were fad dieters that were losing weight but not healthy. So over the last 2 weeks I've eliminated carbs except for the occasional piece of fruit. I'm basically in a high fat, high saturated fat, high cholesterol diet now.

This has lead to my blood pressure normalizing within two weeks (I tracked it every day) and I've busted through the 214lbs wall and dropped 6lbs. I feel spectacular. I've had more energy than I can remember having and I seem to be more focused at work (minus the time spent typing this).

The first couple of days were rough but she told me I had to switch from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat, which comes with headaches to tiredness initially.

I go back for a retest of my blood in 3 months. The nutritionist thinks that my cholesterol will go down and it's the one area I'm concerned about. We'll see what happens there.
I've been doing paleo for a while & I've had excellent results. Just remember, veggies are your friends. Learn to love them.

Also, don't get carried away with the "high fat" is great stuff. Buck is right. Fat gets a bad rap, but fat is very dense in calories. If you're eating a lot of fat, you're consuming a lot of calories.

When did cholesterol become a good thing?

Not trying to start an argument. Real question. I understand the value of good fats, but I've never heard anything good about cholesterol.

Veggies are a huge part of the new and old diet. Even though I've increased the amount of fat I'm eating I haven't gone to the extreme of eating all fat all of the time.

What I've seen and what the nutritionist told me is that our body produces cholesterol all by itself and it turns up the process if it's not getting enough of it from food. This is why my low cholesterol diet lead to an increase. Your body also requires cholesterol to produce all of your hormones.

There's apparently newer studies that show inflammation has a larger affect on plague build up in arteries.

I see. I guess I just still don't believe in a "high" or "no" anything type of diet. I try to remain under a certain number of net calories (increases with the more exercise I get for that day). With those calories, I try to get enough of each of the food groups to stay balanced, which basically means a moderate amount of anything I decide to eat. I think I've done well in balancing carbs, fats, and sugars. I avoid high fructose corn syrup at all costs, as well as white carbs. I tend to eat low fat items except for avacados(sp?) and nuts. It's working well for me so far.

That's pretty much the diet I was on.

It just wasn't working for me from an overall health stand point.

While I am making healthier choices when I eat out, I do still eat out. I'm sure I'm getting more saturated fat than I realize.

Cholesterol is a main player of regulating different hormones in your body. It also gets a bad wrap.

We would not be able to live without it. Not all cholesterol is bad. You hr LDL called "bad cholesterol" but that's a misnomer. LDL is essential too and not all of it is bad. Their is actually more than 1 type of LDL, smaller and larger versions. The smaller particles are worse for you. If you get a Cholesterol Test, ask your Dr for a VAP test as it will measure the amount of small and large LDL particles in your blood.

Well, I got up early twice this week. I prefer going in the mornings. It's cooler and less cars. However, I usually end up having to poop about a mile into it. The only way to make it through is to walk the rest of the way.

Four months in and I am 53 pounds down, and have lost 4 pant sizes and 2 shirt sizes. I have been doing cross-fit and am starting to wonder if I need to start Paelo. I really shouldn't be trying to lose weight at this point, just start maintaining. I am 6'2" and now weigh a whopping 208.5. I am wanting to have a BMI done so I can accurately tell if I am where I need to be.

Body fat % >>> BMI

BMI is just a weight to height ratio.

The government BMI tables are horrible. I'd have to be a stick just to be considered not overweight. I am 2 pounds from being obese according to those numbers. I would have to lose 27 pounds to just be in their normal category. The lower end of that category would force me to move to Somalia to fit in.

I just used the first couple of links that came up on Google, one of which was from a .gov, and it says I'm only a few pounds from being "overweight"...

If I was 148lbs, at 6'2", I'd be on the low end of normal. Only ~50 pounds to go. I don't think I've weighed that since high school, and back then I was like 5'7".

I'm kinda short at 5'6". The minimum healthy weight is 114 lbs, three less than when I was in high school running cross country.
