Killer aps for the iPhone?

My wife finally got her beloved iPhone. I admit that I can't stop playing with the thing either. Anyone have any favorite apps? I've downloaded some freebies: facebook, wikipedia, sports updates, flashlight.

What are some must haves that are actually worth paying for?

How is it that I hadn't heard of this app before? Very cool. I'm now streaming 610, 810, 96.5, 98.9, 101.1, etc. on my iPhone. Nice having access to Royals broadcasts and Chiefs broadcasts over Edge, 3G, or wifi.

Works with any radio station that provides an online stream. Also emergency scanners, NOAA scanner, police scanners, etc.

Very cool.

My "Must haves" for customization:

Winterboard: Customizations galore. Themes, backgrounds, sounds, reflective dock, 5 item dock, lockscreen customizations, etc. Just about everything is customizable.

SBSettings: Gives you a quick access menu to turn on/off wifi, 3G, phone, adjust brightness, or kill processes. Activated by swiping the status bar at the top. Very handy.

Intelliscreen: This app you have to pay for, despite the jailbreak. But it's really worth it. I think you can hack it with some in-depth work so you don't have to pay, but you're an ass if you do.

Cycorder: Record video. (Not 3Gs compatible though)

ToneFXs: Complete customization of iPhone sounds. Another pay app, but well worth it if you like to customize your sounds. Again, you can hack it, but just pay for it...

Installous: It's a hacked app store. Get any app for free. Leave your morality at the door.

iMobileCinema: Very powerful plugin for iPhone Safari. Allows you to play flash videos and a host of other stuff.

Terminal: It's a terminal client for iPhone. I use this a lot. Others may not.

I read a lot of books so for me the killer app is going to be the Kindle support.

As soon as I'm eligible I'm going to upgrade my current AT&T phone to an iphone.

What is the downside to jailbreaking? I want to do that to my wife's IPhone but did not know if it had any negative effects.

They will never have Kindle support on the iPhone. Kindle makes it's money from the expensive Kindle readers, not the ebooks that it uses. And they will restrict Kindle books to the Kindle readers for that reason.

But there is still Stanza. Which is the shiznit. Stanza will allow you to read just about any format of ebook. It's very very well done and makes ebook reading easy on the iPhone. You can transfer ebooks from your desktop to your iPhone. You won't miss Kindle much when you see what Stanza can do.

Not much really. It can void your warranty if you take your iPhone to the Apple store, and they see evidence that it's jailbroken and feel the need to pursue voiding your warranty over it. But you'd have to be pretty dumb for that to happen. You can zap your iPhone back to it's exact pre-jailbroken state quickly and easily, and Apple would never know. It doesn't do anything permanent to the iPhone. I've heard lots of people say that they took their obviously jailbroken phone to the Apple store and had it worked on with nothing ever said too.

Pssst...there's an Amazon Kindle iPhone app in the App Store. And it's a free download. Works great with the whole Kindle ecosystem.

What about updating through ITunes or downloading legit apple store apps?

Most generally when you update the OS, like from OS 2 to OS 3, it will undo whatever jailbreak you've previously done. And you'll have to redo the jailbreak part after updating to a new OS and resync any jailbroken apps. But that's not much of a problem. You may have to wait for a few weeks after a new OS is released before you install it to allow the hackers to create a modified version of it for use with jailbreaking, but that's usually not an issue.

And you can continue to use iTunes exactly like you normally would, and download and pay for all the apps you normally would through iTunes. It doesn't affect the way you connect to iTunes at all, it just adds other methods to connect to the phone other than restricting it solely to iTunes.

Backgrounder app for jailbroken iPhones. Let's you run any app in the background for true multitasking. It's harsh on battery life the more you use it, but that's expected and the reason Apple left it out to begin with. If nothing else, it will allow you to chuckle at your friend bragging that his Pre is the only mobile that has multitasking.....

iPhone-Backgrounder (available for jailbroken iPhones via Cydia) brings another much-desired functionality that Apple's not allowing for legit apps—the ability to run in the background. After installing the extension, simply hold down the home button on the app you want to preserve, and it will keep running until you tell it to stop with another home button press.

What version iPhone and what OS is it currently running?
