Tamba Sweatin’ As An ‘Oldie’
by Bob Gretz
(highlights)

Asked what he weighed this week, Hali said 275 pounds. He said he plays between 260 and 265 pounds during the season. The Chiefs are just about 60 days away from the first practices in pads for the veterans at training camp in St. Joseph. It won’t take a special diet plan for Hali to drop a pound every six days.

“If anybody reminds you of Derrick Thomas it would be that kid and his first step,” Hali said. “He gets off the ball so fast it’s scary. I just kept rewinding it yesterday and looking at it, and it’s like his first step he’s already taken when the ball is snapped. His first step is incredible.”

Notes from Wednesday’s OTA: there were 83 players taking part in the practice . . . rookie quarterback Aaron Murray was not on the field for the second practice of the week. Murray was in Los Angeles for a special rookie photo session that is staged by the league and the NFL Players Association . . . five other players on the roster were not involved in the work: tight end Travis Kelce (injury rehab), wide receiver Kyle Williams (injury rehab), defensive tackle Risean Broussard (injury), running back DeAnthony Thomas (NFL rules) and veteran defenders cornerback Brandon Flowers and outside linebacker Justin Houston.

Chiefs continue OTAs without Houston, Flowers
by Herbie Teope

The second day of organized team activities (OTAs) concluded Wednesday with the Chiefs still down two Pro Bowl starters on defense.

Outside linebacker Justin Houston and cornerback Brandon Flower missed a second straight day. But at least with Houston, outside linebacker Tamba Hali didn’t sound concerned when asked if Houston would eventually return.

“As far as I know,” Hali said. “He will. We’re good friends. He’s coming.”

The OTAs are voluntary, but that didn’t stop a reporter from asking Hali if there was a specific reason for Houston’s absence.

“I don’t know why he’s not here,” Hali responded. “I hear the rumors, but that’s between him and whomever.”

The rumors Hali alludes to are Houston, who enters the final year of his contract, not being at OTAs based on a desire for a new contract, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Tuesday. When it comes to Flowers, speculation mounts of a pending trade or a release.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding their absences, defensive tackle Dontari Poe echoed Hali in not showing too much concern. Poe also isn’t worried over any lost time affecting Houston and Flowers.

“They’re professionals,” Poe said. “They know what they need to work on. Like we were saying, it’s the same scheme as last year, so they’re not learning anything new. As long as they come in and their bodies are in shape – and I know they’ve been working out – so it’ll be alright.”

Meanwhile, also not present for a second straight day were defensive tackle Risean Broussard (knee) and running back/specialist De’Anthony Thomas (Oregon quarter system). Rookie quarterback Aaron Murray, who was present Tuesday, missed Wednesday to attend a rookie symposium.

Wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee) returned after being absent Tuesday, but observed from the side and did not participate in organized drills. The same applied to tight end Travis Kelce (knee), who watched from the side wearing a white baseball cap.

Left tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder) appeared limited again. While Fisher participated in warm-ups and individual drills, he mostly observed when the Chiefs went to team-related drills, including 11-on-11.

Donald Stephenson filled in again at left tackle a second straight day, while J’Marcus Webb filled in at right tackle with the first unit. Jeff Linkenbach played right tackle with the first team on Tuesday.

Also of note, Rishaw Johnson continues to run with the first unit at right guard.

Coach Andy Reid did not address the media, but is scheduled for Thursday. The Chiefs wrap up the first set of OTAs Thursday before reporting for the second set June 3-5.

OTA observations:

• During 11-on-11 drills, quarterback Alex Smith completed a pretty back-shoulder throw almost 20 yards from the line of scrimmage to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who made a sliding grab. Cornerback Marcus Cooper was in tight coverage, but the ball was perfectly placed.

• Marcus Cooper had what would’ve been a pick-6 on Smith in a live game. Smith’s intended target, wide receiver A.J. Jenkins, slipped coming out of his break near the right sideline. Also during the play, rookie outside linebacker Dee Ford beat right tackle J’Marcus Webb and was applying outside pressure on Smith.

• Tight end Demetrius Harris carried over momentum from the final day of rookie minicamp to the first two days of OTAs. He turned in a strong performance Wednesday with athletic reception, diving or leaping, during the 11-on-11 portion.

• Marcus Cooper filled in for Brandon Flowers at outside cornerback during team drills. Free-agent signing, Chris Owens, defended mostly in the slot. Frank Zombo continues to fill in with the first team in Justin Houston’s absence.

• Rookie kicker Cairo Santos has a strong leg and consistently placed the ball in the back end of the end zone during special teams kickoff drills. Things could get interesting in training camp in a kicker battle between Santos and Ryan Succop.

Sticking up for her man

With the status of quarterback Alex Smith’s contract all over the map with the national media, Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, chimed in with a tweet directed to Evan Silva of NBC Sports and Ian Rappoport of the NFL Network:

“Although I find this comical.. You are clearly misinformed!! Your “source” is leading you astray,” she tweeted.

Even without Flowers we have Smith, Cooper, Owens, Gaines and Parker. Flowers is for sure gone.

Phase Three OTAs Day Two Recap
by Rachel Santschi
(highlights)

Q: What’s your reaction whenever people say that Dee Ford will take over when you’re done?

HALI: “That’s great. As an older guy, I need to make sure to step my game up and make sure I can play a few more years here and at the same time, knowing this kid is coming in and he’ll be able to help us. We were in situations last year only having one pass rusher in the game and when two guys are in the game it’s kind of deadly. We add a third and hopefully we can get all of us on the field.”

Q: How do you navigate that relationship with a guy who may eventually take your job?

HALI: “Oh, I have to help this guy. The Chiefs have been loyal to me and kept me here for a long time even when I had three sacks in my career. They still believed in my talent and kept me around. The best thing I can do with the knowledge that I’ve acquired is to pass it onto these guys. We want to win a championship however we can. We have to share the knowledge and build on what we have right now.”

Q: How many more years do you have in you, do you think?

HALI: “It’s a year-to-year thing for me. It’s all about winning this championship. I haven’t been that focused on winning a championship, but I wish I knew the reality right now of where I am in my career. You get older and guys like Tony Gonzalez taking off and looking to win a championship. It’s very important right now that our focus is to win a championship. We can’t sell ourselves short; we have the best coach in the game. I mean, come on.”

Q: When does that mindset come about?

HALI: “I’m getting older.”

Q: But it’s different than when you first got into the league?

HALI: “Yeah, I mean I felt like Dee Ford. I come out here and run around and chase everything around and go have fun with my family, do whatever I want. Now when I’m done here, I have to sleep and then go workout again. It’s a process and I want to give myself a chance to be able to help our team. All the guys should be doing the same and just humbling ourselves and realizing how hard it is to get to the playoffs.”

Q: Does everybody share your sense of urgency?

HALI: “I know a few guys that do and I hope everybody feels the same way. Honestly, we really should be able to pass this onto the younger guys as fast as we can, because they have to understand that this thing is not for long. We have a little time here to enjoy ourselves, but at the same time, in the same sense be able to accomplish a goal. I think we have all of the pieces that we need here and I think Andy (Reid) and his staff do a tremendous job in preparing us and we just have to be dedicated and committed throughout the year while we’re here.”

Q: How gut-wrenching was the playoff loss?

HALI: “I think that’s the worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. I’ve never been a part of something like that. We know the type of team we have and what we can accomplish. Maybe we took some things for granted and that one will sit with us throughout the year and throughout the games. That will sit with us because we definitely have something to prove. To lose a game like that – our fans know it, our players know it, the guys that have been here and the coaches, it’s hard for them to continue to do what they’re doing knowing that they put so much in and how we accomplished so much at the point and things turn around like that. It will sit with us and help us go through this season.”

Q: Do you think people will remind each other of that loss throughout the season?

HALI: “Yeah, I mean keeping our guys here, our core guys that are here, that stuff hurts. We play the game and we get tired and go home and we may forget about it, but we know how our fans feel about that and we know how the town feels about that. That’s something they’ve been looking forward to and I believe everybody felt we had it, even the guys on the team felt like we had it.”

Q: Are you ready to play over 1,000 snaps again?

POE: “Whatever we need. I haven’t been running all these sprints or doing all this for no reason. Whatever this team needs me to do is what I’ll do.”

Q: Where did you check in weight-wise when you reported?

POE: “336 right now.”

Q: That’s lighter than last year?

POE: “Yeah, it’s just saving a little bit for me in the winter time because everyone knows how I go at that time of the year. I’m under now, I should be even by then.”
