Can Travis Kelce have a better career than Tony G?

I think we can all agree that Travis Kelce has shown some major potential. If I recall correctly, a number of years ago, we had a tight end named Tony Gonzalez that was pretty damned good as well.

So, simple question. In your opinion, does Kelce have the talent, potential, and discipline to have a better career than Tony Gonzalez.

Poll to follow.

Also, Travis Kelce seems to be a very likable player as well. Seems down to earth, level-headed, and has fun with the fans on twitter. I remember a lot of the people from the Kansas City community mentioned that Tony G was sort of stand-offish and arrogant at times. For those of you into that sort of thing, does that make you like Kelce more than Tony?

He's got the talent and the benefit of playing his entire career in the new NFL, but I wonder about his knee.

Gonzalez had a HOF career and is perhaps the best TE to ever play the position. I really like Kelce and hope that he can have a similar career, but I'm not ready to say that he could match, much less surpass Tony G.

doubtful ... Gonzalez was amazingly durable and got better as he got older due to amazing preparation and taking care of his body in unfathomable ways

but numbers wise, Gonzalez won't hold on to those records forever. Game has changed too much and the passing numbers are all going to be obliterated

The new NFL is one of the things on my mind while I'm trying to decide. At the same time though, even playing in a different NFL, Tony G benefited from a great offense with not a lot of options at wideout. He was getting a shit ton of targets iirc, mainly because we had no legitimate receivers outside of Kennison.

The best thing about Tony G, imo, was his dependability. As his career went on, when the ball was thrown to him, you just didn't have to worry about drops. The dude had major hands.

Is there a TE in the league right now that you think has a great shot at beating TG's numbers?

If I had to guess, I'd think you'd go with Jimmy Graham. But I wonder about how he'll be utilized in Seattle.

I'm guessing he either gets hurt or leaves town because we won't be able to afford him.

I think Kelce will be great as far as a receiving TE goes, but you're comparing him to the GOAT, which really isn't fair to the guy.

Tony's longevity is really what's going to help keep his numbers afloat, but the league is just changing too rapidly.

3 or 4 TEs caught 10+ TD passes last season. Gonzalez only did that three times in his entire career.

Anything's possible, but I'm not sure how plausible it is. Because I'm not sure what kind of focus he has and I'm not sure how healthy he can be over the long term.

Kelce is already more dangerous after the catch than Gonzalez ever was when I saw him.

At this point, Kelce can't touch him in terms of hands, dependability, durability, etc.

No. Too much production for too long.

He's #2 on the receptions list for God's sake.

Yeah, I guess. Will was too definitive, I thought. I figured I'd get attacked with, "One year and now we're claiming he'll have a better career than our HOF TE!!! RAGE RAGE RAGE!" Those kinds of posts. The question is more about his potential than anything. I wasn't sure how to word it.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Anyway, Tony, great as he was, also put up a lot of his numbers with a BIG offensive team in the early 2000's. Unless we change how we operate, Kelce's never gonna be able to produce quickly enough to keep up.
