Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Me too. No way I'd choose the Mossberg over the Remington. I've owned both, and the 870 is just a perfect shotgun IMO..

Just made the switch from Springfield XDM 9mm to Springfield XD3 Sub Compact .40 for CCW.

Packs quiet a bit more punch than the 9mm which I prefer because I'll be more likely to have to defend myself against a bear, mountain lion or mule deer in heat these days than a human. More compact and lighter to boot.

Great little piece if anyone is in the market I highly reccomend you take a look at this weapon. I would have gone Glock but the grip for whatever reason just feals so much more natural on the Springfield pistols. Both are great weapons however.

Interesting you ask.

I've used a 10ga of a buddy a few times turkey hunting. It's heavier to carry, but has a lot more whack at a distance.

Given that, I'm in the market for a decent 10Ga if anyone finds a deal.

Single shot, double barrel, semi-auto? H&R makes a 10 gauge single shot turkey gun with a sling and camo stock for around $320.00.

Anybody have experience with a Ruger LC9?

My dad is looking for a CC pistol, and the Ruger caught his eye. I've never shot one, so I couldn't give any feedback on it.

Grandad had a double side by side with external hammers he called "The Long Tom". Somewhere in the family is a pic of me and him when I was 6 with the mess of snow geese he shot with it. I'm holding the gun and it's a good foot taller than me..lol

I've never shot the LC9 but my brother has the SR9. Like any Ruger it is well built and dependable. Also like a typical Ruger it could use a little work on the trigger. Great guns, I've owned/own everything from their Single Six to a Redhawk and liked every one of them. They are a hard gun to beat for the price. Tell your dad to find a range close by that rents guns. Most places have at least a few Rugers on the shelf and that is the best way to find out if you like a gun or not.

Trigger pull is way too long, the slide is way harder to cycle by hand than almost any other pistol, and it has a lot of kick for a little 9mm.

I absolutely loath my wife's LC9. Do you want to buy it?

When I took my CCW class in Missouri they made me range qualify on for a semi-auto and a revolver. I don't own a revolver so i rented one of their LC9s. It shot fine. I will say this though...the trigger pull took a few rounds to get used to. If he gets one for CC, he needs to continually practice with it. I can see that trigger pull, in a life or death situation, throwing shots way off if the user doesn't have a lot of range time with it.
Scratch that whole blurb. Heh...I was thinking of the LCR.

I normally turkey hunt in 3 states each spring with an SP10. No way I'll go back to the 12ga for turkeys until I'm too old to pack it. If you're a run and gun style guy you'll know you're packing it around but if you're a sit and wait for them to commit hunter you won't really notice much difference. The recoil really isn't much different than a 3 1/2" 12ga as the 10ga is more of a heavy shove where the 3 1/2" 12ga is a violent slap.
Neither is pleasant, but it's only one shot so it's not a big deal.

They really shine during goose season though. Normally run a case or two of shells through it following the snow goose migration each spring before switching to the 12ga. I won't lie, if you're going to do this you can't be a mangina. You need the upper body strength and abs to sit up out of the layout blind and take a beating every time they commit. The extra weight is significant when you're doing this over and over day after day. Another down side to the SP10 is the amount of shells you can load as there is currently no shell extension being made. If you're shooting cleanup behind a group you really only need a few shots so it really doesn't matter, but if you're a lead gun you really need to be able to throw 8 shells out there in a hurry.

I do try to hand load as much as possible as 10ga ammo can be expensive and not always easy to find in Podunk, MO, Shitville, Nebraska, or Middle of Nowhere, SD.

I think they still have their place, but most people probably consider them obsolete and too much of a pain to deal with when you can just shoot a 3 1/3" 12ga.

You should really get the Browning Gold and SP10 in your hands at the same time to pick your favorite. They're both big and heavy, but I think there are significant differences in fit and feel that you'll want to experience before spending the money on one or the other.

Little peeved tonight. I am\was a member of OMB Guns but as of tonight, no longer. I have been a member for over a year and every time I brought my .223 in they never asked me anything. The last time I went in they asked what kind of ammo I was firing to make sure they were just FMJ's. Okay, not a problem on my part. Tonight however they tell me I HAVE to buy their ammo. I told them I never had to do it before and they said it's their policy and I should have. I again said no one ever told me I had to buy THEIR ammo and the guy whom I have never seen said he always made people do that. So I told them they can inspect my ammo but either I am firing my ammo or I am canceling my membership. He went in back and some girl comes out saying she called the owner and then tried to explain how they just dumped $100k on renovating the range and I have to buy their ammo regardless of any prior exceptions. I pointed out that they never had .223 on the shelf last year and they conceded but now that their shelf is full and they have spent this money they want me to buy their marked up ammo.

So I asked them what was the difference between my ammo and their ammo and they couldn't\wouldn't answer and just said they were sorry, bla bla bla. I again pointed out that this was BS and they were just trying to squeeze coin out of me. So needless to say I didn't get to shoot and I left OMB without my membership card. They can kiss my ass with that shit. I'm firing brand new, not re-loaded, brass FMJ's. They should have no problems with that but all they were interested in was making me purchase their ammo which, ironically, is the same ****ing thing.
