Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

I've never really been a 17 fan, but I don't do a lot of small caliber plunking either. I've filmed a few bobcat hunts for a guy who's bat shit crazy about all the 17 rounds. He really likes them and will go into great detail about why they're the best on earth.

I prefer the larger hotter round.
I've got a 17 Hornet rifle and it's tremendous but getting ammo is a pain. Other than that, love it. The 22-250 is similar but has a hotter, heavier round. How much did your set up set you back and what brand of rifle do you have? There's a pawn shop that has a savage 22-250 with a scope on it and a fluted barrel, it looks like it's in good shape.

Mine is a Thompson Center Encore. It was a gift/trade, so I'm not sure what the stainless rigs run now. The 22-250 isn't the easiest ammo to find, but it's not normally too hard to track down and I don't shoot it all that often so it's not too hard to keep a small pile around for it.

The Judge... 410 shot/slug and 45... has anyone shot one, I'm hearing all kinds of shit, some terrible some awesome and I have a pretty god idea where I'm going, but wanted to hear the Planets take beforehand for sure.

They're inexpensive but shoot 410 shotgun and 45, all in a well made lightweight frame... the only true hangup I'm hearing about is the ribbed 410 shells, everything else is 8/10 positive.

Need some help here, want a self defender to go with my BOB 22.

How can they make a revolver like that if sawed off shotguns are illegal? Are sawed off shotguns still illegal?

I like the idea.

I'm guessing the only reason they're still legal is the relative guage of the 410 round... the longer barrel on a sawed off, full size barrel makes the shotgun round extremely dangerous in close confines.

But a pistol designed for 410 and 45 rounds is inherently limited, big kick, small pattern with buckshot, short range duty only... but a full size sawed off 12 gauge on the other hand is a ridiculous, and illegal, powerbomb.

The Gov, huh? I HAVE heard if it but haven't looked into it yet, I'll be on the lookout for online reviews, I'm wondering what peculiarities make it better than the Taurus or Bond Arms models.

I've seen ONE TERRIBLE review on it and four other very good ones... the bad review was "well, with a 410 slug I only got 12 inches of penetration on these here gallon jugs"

My thought upon reading it was... "well how much penetration do you need old timer, need it to blow a hole the size of a golfball out their back to settle the matter?"

I wanted to like the Governor, but I just can't when I first heard about it I was excited when it said 3 calibers.....then I saw one was 45ACP. Sorry 45ACP is utterly ****ing pointless in the gun. Why even bother.

The one I will pick up hopefully soon is the Taurus Raging Judge Magnum. 45 Long Colt(really why bother lol), 3" 410 shotgun shell(not only 2.5" like the governator), and the kicker....454 Casull.

Now this thing will bring the pain(and not just from the recoil! )

The reason the Judge and Governor style revolvers are legal is because they are not smoothbores. Those revolvers have a very shallow rifling, making them handguns.

Incidentally, this is also why those guns are are not as useful as you think. They don't shoot 45 Colt very well because the rifling is shallow. They don't shoot 410 well because the rifling creates a donut hole in the shot pattern.

So the accuracy is actually better than one might think. Check the end of the video I posted. He bulleyes the both the 45LC rounds hits 1/2 bullseyes with the 454 casull(and the first shot isn't terrible right height just pulled left). The 410 shotgun pattern isn't too spread at what I think is 7-10 yards.

The problem with rifling and shot is that it spins the balls and causes them to spin outward too fast. You would see significant spread in that case and it doesn't look that bad on the vids I've seen. Part of that is lessened by using larger shot/slugs that handle rifling better.

But really the gun is designed for ~5-10 yards and they've got the rifling decently well done. It will stabilize the bullets without spinning the hell out of the shot.

BTW the governor/judge's aren't natively legal everywhere. Due to quicks in the law I know they would normally be considered Short Barreled Shotguns in places like California. Even if it wasn't rifled it would only need to be papered as an AOW to be legal most everywhere.

Not great but if you have a Pro Bass around your area it's in there. My credit card went through on the order, but no email so I called and it was there screw up they don't ship ammo, in store only, pricks.

.22 LR .8 a round.

So I went ahead and bought a used Marlin rifle that shoots the 17hmr, with a used scope on it. I had the dealer mount the scope too. All told, with tax, about $388. It's used, but it's a nice rifle. I can hardly wait to shoot it.

Marlin is a quality rifle. I got my first one, a Model 37A Golden Mountie, back around 1976. It has 10's of thousands of rounds through it and it never misses a beat. I didn't even know that they made a 17hmr.
