Chiefs postgame comments - we need UNITY.

Has anyone posted this? Couldn't find it.

Sounds like Herm's blaming Huard for the conservative play calling. Sounds like he has no confidence in Huard and backhandedly says Huard blew the few trust opportunities he had.

Johnson blames himself, Suonds like Waters blames the Offensive play calling.
Every player says "we can't hang our heads walking out of here"

I'm glad we have a bye this week. We need it big time, to get our sh*t together. Plus a (suposedly) easy opponent at home, will help if Trent's not back. I think (and hope) our D can start to walk around with some confidence after Sunday.

I'm keeping the BELIEVE avatar up.

VIDEO: Herm Edward Postgame Comments

HEAD COACH HERM EDWARDS
Opening Statement
“Obviously it was a defensive game and a field position game. Going in to the game and into the first half historically we have not played well here, but I think that we did good to keep it close. Turnovers definitely got us a couple of times. You cannot do that in a game like this, against a team like this. You have to give them credit. We left some things out there. We will grow and we have to do some things better.“

On QB Damon Huard
“There were a couple of situations where we might have given him too much. The guy hasn’t played a lot. For the most part, he kept us in the game and our defense did too. We just gave him too much and you have to know who is playing; who is out on the field for you.“

On not using timeouts
“We thought about it but then it got to third-and-thirteen. We wanted to get the ball, drive down, and kick a field goal with no time left but we lost some yards. We needed to at least get to the thirty and we couldn’t do that.“

On the team’s progress
“I think we played a lot better than last week. Especially for coming in to here (Denver) they played a lot better. Today it was a game of the defense really dominating. The defense played really well in the red-zone.“

On the defensive performance
”We battled out there. We played well. This (Denver) is a really good football team. You know they are going to break a run or two and they did. Our defense played really well in the red-zone. You have to be in it in the fourth quarter to win it. So we had the ball in the end to try to win it but just couldn’t get it done.“

On how he felt QB Huard performed
“He’ll learn from it. I don’t know if Trent Green will be back after the bye-week, but if Huard has to play we will play with him. Their defense was definitely playing the run. We were trying to get the ball out to the flat and trying not to be too conservative. We probably would have taken more chances if Trent Green had been playing. We got the ball to Larry Johnson in the flats and got a few yards off that.“

On the Chiefs’ 0-2 start
“There are still 14 games left. We need to re-group in the bye-week and come back and be ready for San Francisco. We will have to correct some things and see where we are after that.“

On playing on the road
“You have to take more chances. With Trent Green we would have made more plays. On the road you have to take the crowd out of it. We had a chance to win this and that is all that you can ask for.“

CHIEFS PLAYERS

LOLB DERRICK JOHNSON
On the game plan
“We had a great defensive plan and we stuck to it. But at the same time, in order to win you have to score. We can’t hang our heads about this. We played a good game out there.“

On playing at Mile High
“We had a lot of confidence coming in to the game. Our job is to stop the other team and we did that. They played a heck of a game. To come in to Mile High and play this well is something that we cannot hang our heads about.“

WR DANTE HALL
On getting to overtime
“It is no consolation at all. We came in here with one purpose and that was to win. To come that close and not pull it out is really disappointing but we cannot hang our heads about that.“

On the Chiefs’ running game
“As a wide-out I would be lying if I said I liked it, but it did give us the best opportunity for the win. We had a chance to win; we just didn’t make the plays at the end.“

On field position
“We did what we wanted to do which was to come in and win the battle of field position and not turn the ball over. The game plan put us in position to win but we just came up short in the end.“

On the Chiefs’ 0-2 start
“If we were 0-and-2 and a bad team we might be hanging our heads and think that maybe this isn’t our year. But today we played well against a really good football team. They were the AFC West champs and they didn’t even score a touchdown on us. You have to look at the positives. We have 14 games left. New England did it last year, so why can’t we?“

G BRIAN WATERS
On the play of the Kansas City defense
“The defense played as well as you could ask for. They did an unbelievable job of keeping us in the game. On offense we weren’t doing a great job of scoring but we actually moved the ball well early and made plays when necessary. We can’t turn the ball over in the red-zone. We have to do a better job on the sideline as far as getting on the same page of what plays are going to be called. It was a good effort, but not good enough to win.“

On Kansas City’s offensive performance
“I think we missed some opportunities early in the game. The way we moved the ball we should have had a lot more points going into the half. We didn’t do a good enough job as far as putting points on the board.“

RB LARRY JOHNSON
General
“I blame myself because you can’t fumble five yards from the end zone. That is not something you can do, not against this team. I know how it feels to win a game and I know how it feels to lose a game. As a team on offense you have to get the ball in the end zone. It doesn’t matter how hard you play, you have to score.“

On potential big runs
“The first couple of big runs, I thought I was going to break them. When you feel those kinds of runs coming on you just hope you can break them off.“

On penetrating the red-zone
“We still had to get the ball down to the 20 yard line. When we just got to that 30 we couldn’t get passed the mental block of getting into the end zone.“

On the play of Kansas City’s defense
“The defense played really hard. Those guys played really, really hard. I feel that with our offense being so highly ranked the last couple of seasons that we thought all we needed was a couple of touchdowns. The defense played as good of a game as I have seen since I have been here.“

CB PATRICK SURTAIN
General
“We came in with the mindset that we wanted to shut these guys out. We shut them out in the first half and in the second half it wasn’t good enough. With the bye-week coming up we have to go back and look at what we did wrong and correct it. It is a team game. It doesn’t matter how many points the offense scores. Our job on defense is to go out there and not let the other guys score. The field goals (Denver) got, they shouldn’t have got on us. We can take some pride in holding them to nine points but the fact is that we lost the game. Starting the season 0-and-2 is tough and we have to get rolling.“

QB DAMON HUARD
On Kansas City’s game plan
“When you don’t score touchdowns you are never going to be completely satisfied. We did move the ball, got a lot of first downs. We controlled the clock for the most part in the first half. We just had some unfortunate things happen in the red-zone. In this league, on the road when you are down there you have to score touchdowns if you are going to win.“

On losing the game
“Absolutely, (we had a chance to win this game). It was a hard fought game. Our teammates, our defense, everyone came to fight. We played hard and I give credit to Denver. They did it in the end. We need to hold our heads up high walking out of here.“

On his fumble
“Certainly I would like to have that one back. I would obviously knock the ball down, but it just happened so fast. It was instinct and I would like to have that play over.“

On clock management before half-time
“There was just a little confusion on the line of scrimmage. With nine seconds I didn’t want to have a bad play and lose the opportunity to kick a field goal so I thought it made the most sense with where we were at that time to take the timeout and make sure we got three points.“

On taking things from this game
“You never feel good when you don’t win. There are some good things to look at. We need to hold our heads up high, we fought hard but fell short.”
