A (Realistic) Offseason Outlook

Common theme here but I'm just going to go through what I think will happen this offseason with the Chiefs... not what I want to happen, but what I expect. Rather than critique, do your own too and add to the conversation. The cap numbers are all based on OTC's projections.

Free Agency:
- Roll over $5,002,168 in cap room
- Void Nick Foles' contract ($10,750,000 is cap space added)
- Restructure Jamaal Charles' contract from a $6,187,500 million cap hit to a $2 million hit with incentives built in
- Extend and restructure Dustin Colquitt's contract to bring his cap hit in 2017 to $3M.
- These moves bring the Chiefs to $25,453,241 in cap space before additions. With a projected 10-11 picks, OTC projects us to need around $7M to sigh draft picks. I suspect a couple of these picks will be traded in some way, so it'll go down to 8-9 picks and $6M needed. We'll bring the number down to $19.5M in cap space.
-Re-sign Eric Berry to a 5-year, $56M deal with $30M guaranteed. Cap number in 2017 is $7.5M. Total space down to 12M.
- Re-sign Daniel Sorenson to a 3-year, $9M deal. 2017 cap number is $2M. Down to $10M to spend.
-Re-sign Cairo Santos to a 4-year, $12M deal. 2017 cap number is $2.5M. Down to $7.5M to spend.
-Sign ILB Gerald Hodges to a 3-year, $15M deal. This of course depends on how they feel about guys like Ramik, Mauga, and JML going forward. 2017 cap number is $4M. Cap space finishes at $3.5M.

Not going to go into a whole mock draft this early on before FA, but if things go like I have above I would expect the Chiefs to draft a edge rusher (Too many uncertainties ahead at OLB), a QBOTF, CB depth, HB, WR depth, G, and interior DL help.. maybe a S late.

He's on IR.

And as much as everyone likes Sherman, it's ridiculous to pay a guy $2.3 million this year for 5 offensive snaps a game.

He's pretty integral to our special teams it seems though.

Solution: Use him more (i.e. get the run game going)

Thanks Dane. I didn't realize he was on IR. But I don't know about cutting Sherman. I have mixed feelings on that. You're right that he isn't used enough on offense. Maybe he should be. Our running game needs improvement from somewhere, and when he was being used, he was regarded as one of the best fullbacks in the game. Plus, he is pretty valuable on special teams. Not to mention, I believe that he led the team in FF this year. I would like to see him make less for what he contributes. One more thing. Are you suggesting that we use Mallard or an UDFA FB to replace him or are you saying that we should just completely eliminate FB from our roster and keep an extra HB?

Sherman has forced like 9 or 10 fumbles on STs the past two years... I'll pay 2.3M for that.

I'd hang onto Sherman. He's a ST winner and he's a lot better blocker than any other back we have. He's got good hands, too. I just think we need to use him more.

Already in a free fall from their playoff loss at Arrowhead to the Pittsburgh Steelers in January, losing the finest personnel man they’ve had in their fifty-year history, Chris Ballard, Alex Smith named the 2017 starter, now comes news that All Pro Safety, Eric Berry will not play under the franchise tag next season, but wants to remain in Kansas City.

Once again the Kansas City Chiefs are proving the adage, if you wait it’ll be too late. In the case of Safety, Eric Berry, he played the 2016 season under the franchise tag. He made it clear on Thursday with NFL Network and the KC Star, he has no plans to do that again in 2017.

The missteps by the Chiefs organization to date are simply alarming. Let’s recap!

The Steelers playoff loss showed significant holes in the offensive coaching philosophies and misuse of defensive personnel on the field. Yet, none of the coaches have been terminated. Most notably Offensive Line Coach, Andy Heck and Linebackers Coach, Gary Gibbs. Both coaches have underperformed since they arrived in Kansas City four years ago.
Chiefs Management allowed, Chris Ballard, to join the Colts without putting up a fight. That result emphatically suggests KC’s personnel department has slid down the AFC West rankings.
Andy Reid, put his job on the line, by announcing that Quarterback, Alex Smith will be the Chiefs starting quarterback this season – despite multiple sources stating the organization is strongly considering Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, Tony Romo, as an option in 2017 and 2018.
The organization, despite closing in on a deal for nearly two months, Lame duck General Manager, John Dorsey has failed to sign Defensive Tackle, Dontari Poe to his contract extension. If the deal is not done in the next month, he could walk for Free Agency in March.
Now, All Pro Safety, Eric Berry, who has backed off on some of his contract demands of a year ago, wants to remain a Chief for life. The organization, like the Poe contract, can’t seem to get the deal closed, and that falls on Dorsey.

When the Kansas City Chiefs were battling Linebacker, Justin Houston, and his agents two years ago, Reid had to step into the talks to assist his hand-picked GM to get the deal closed. Same went for Quarterback, Alex Smith. If the organization wants to retain both Poe and Berry, he likely must do the same.

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports
I’ve stated before, based on conversations with agents, Dorsey isn’t a good back and forth negotiator. His flaws on the personnel side were made clear with drafts one and two in Kansas City. Had Ballard, not stepped into the mess of two basically failed drafts, I’d shudder to think where the Chiefs would be right now.

The bells and whistles continue to come out of Arrowhead showing signs there is a shift within the organization, that’s hoping not to take a pair of steps backwards in 2017, versus that of one that wants to go all in this year. If some of the items above don’t get figured out next week, it’s clear to me, something else is afoot in the organization. Could significant changes be on the horizon after this season in Kansas City?

The fact, Reid like Dorsey, both are entering this season, without a contract extension, makes little sense for an organization, looking to create a winning environment.

Now, this morning Chairman Clark Hunt, was on local KC sports radio station, 810, stating he wants to get Berry signed and his point men, Andy Reid and John Dorsey, hope to continue their long-standing relationship in Kansas City, does ease some concerns. But actions, not words, will get the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl.

Either way you flip this coin, it’s not good we are in February and nothing at One Arrowhead Drive has changed even in the slightest since the embarrassing loss to the Steelers. If the Chiefs continue to stand pat, any chance to win back-to-back AFC West titles, will significantly diminish over the next three months.

Sure, it’s early in the off-season, but the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos have made significant moves to their coaching staff and are well ahead of the pack in fighting for 2017 division supremacy.

The fix won’t be easy because both Reid and Dorsey are among the most stubborn duo in the NFL. They are rigged in their stance to succumb to any change in their tactics that could benefit the team.

Reid with his coaching style, loyalty to coaches that are not among the best within the division, and his three-headed offensive play calling mandate, that left at least 14 points on the board against the Steelers.

Dorsey, not known for his personnel prowess lost some personnel control to Ballard the last two years, yet he’s suddenly the man taking over that department once again?

I don’t envy the position of Clark Hunt. He’s still chasing the shadows of his father, Founder Lamar Hunt, to deliver another Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs nation. Though, that charge fell two games short the last two seasons, now is not the time to settle for the status quo.

If Kansas City wants to become a perennial contender, it’s time they shake of the rust of mediocrity and post season losses, and become the most aggressive team in the AFC West in March and April.
