Flanagan: KCFX plans to keep Chiefs

Lots of different Chiefs TV/radio related notes in this column... looks like we'll be CBS' game of the week in Week 1.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...s/12467795.htm

Others may show interest, but KCFX wants to keep Chiefs
JEFFREY FLANAGAN
Kansas City Star

About those whispers that KCFX-FM may be in for a fight to keep the Chiefs’ radio network: Not true — at least not now.

Susquehanna Radio Corp., which owns KCFX, has two years left on its contract with the Chiefs and has no plans on letting go of its grip

“This will be our 16th season with the Chiefs, and we’re very pleased with our arrangement,” said David Alpert, market manager for Susquehanna’s Kansas City group. “Whatever rumors there are, they aren’t true. There may be other groups interested. There always are. But we plan on continuing our arrangement.”

One of the rumors has Entercom and KCSP (610 Sports) as an interested party. It’s no secret that KCSP could benefit from a major franchise such as the Chiefs’ radio network, and KCSP recently landed the Chiefs’ coach’s show with Dick Vermeil, a show traditionally reserved for the rights holder.

Michael Keck, general manager of Entercom/Kansas City, did not return calls Wednesday.

“All I know is we’re very happy with the Chiefs, and the Chiefs are very happy with us,” Alpert said. “As a matter of fact, we’re already starting talks about an extension to our present deal.”

***

On the subject of the Chiefs, they’ve drawn the No. 1 broadcasting team from CBS for their opener against the New York Jets at Arrowhead on Sept. 11.

Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will be in the booth, with Bonnie Bernstein roaming the sideline (and searching for Roy Williams).

***

Metro Sports has been cleared to replay the Chiefs-Seahawks game this weekend.

The live game is Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. on KCTV Channel 5. The replay on Metro Sports will be at 8 p.m. Sunday.

***

Another programming note for Sunday: This being the 36th and final season of “Monday Night Football” on ABC, the network is airing an hourlong show on the 36 greatest moments in Monday night games.

Included among the 36 moments are Howard Cosell breaking the news that John Lennon had been shot, Terrell Owens breaking out a sharpie after scoring a touchdown, and the Bears fan who jumped out of the stands and into the tunnel to catch an extra point.

There are two Chiefs moments included: Denver’s Steve Atwater laying out Christian Okoye, and the Joe Montana-John Elway shootout at Mile High Stadium, won, of course, by Montana.

Never heard Jim Nantz to commentating before. Should be interesting. Can't be any worse than that prick Greg Gumbel

On a related note, out of town fans only have to wait until 12am Monday to watch the game on the NFL Network this week.

Chiefs are going to get some exposure that first month of the season.

CBS #1 team (and the featured game for CBS that day I assume, since CBS has no late games that day b/c of the tennis US Open) for the Jets game, prime time for the Denver and Raiders games and I would think FOX is going to have their #1 or #2 announcing teams doing the Philly game.
