If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

Nobody wants to endure the losing seasons most elite teams suffer while building their championship caliber teams. But that is often the cost of greatness.

You suck for a while. You stockpile high draft picks. You lose and stockpile more. Your good coaches don't get pilfered by the losers. Some of your good players are hidden away where you don't have to pay massive contracts to resign them. Then someday you fill in the missing pieces and make your super bowl runs.

Nobody wants to suck even for a while.

But I will take that any day over being a Lions fan and never going to a super bowl in franchise history. I

It is bad enough being the Bills and losing 4 straight super bowls, and going 0-4 but at least you can't blame your owner for not trying.

That 'best available QB' is still only the 15th-20th best starting QB in the league. They gave up a lot to get him, which will make it harder (not impossible, but harder) to get a franchise QB in the draft, especially considering the organization is acting like it has found its guy and might not even try until/unless Alex Smith proves he is not the guy.

Hypothetical: Let's say the Chiefs flip things around, end up 10-6 and lose in the first round of the playoffs. In that playoff game, Alex Smith is horrid on third down and the Chiefs struggle to put points on the board against a playoff-caliber defense, leading to a loss in which the Chiefs are dominated and never really are in the game.

That might be a fun season. But would you consider that outcome building towards a better future (with Alex Smith at the helm)?
First off how do you know Alex will be the 15th or 20th next year? Every year is different. He was the Best available was he not? If the chiefs could have given just a 5th rounder I am sure they would have. You can't say we gave too much when he has not even thrown a pass yet. Maybe he will make everyone happy on here and get hurt so they can drag up their post and say-"see I told you he was going to suck."

So if we go from a 2 win season to 10-6 and the playoffs that would not make you happy? That would be a Huge turn around.

IMHO, if you are that good a team, then you bulk up and prepare to wreck your division for years when you finally get your franchise QB. I knew the Chiefs were not in complete rebuilding mode or they never would have traded for Alex. But trading high picks for temporary 10 win seasons only to be hurt

Who did you lose out on with pick #34 gone this year? A lot of value slipped much further than that. Tell me that you couldn't use that #34 pick in the draft this year for strong starter at a need for the next decade?
More assumptions- that all #34 picks end up being strong starters for the next decade. They are rookies and taking a QB that can make you an instant contender is much better than chanceing a few picks that might or might not pan out.

We heard all this with Montana- he was washed up ect ect. But he made us instant contenders- if he didnt get knocked out of the Bills game we would have went to the SB. And who were the picks we gave up again???

2. Alex Smith is the worst QB to ever play and we are doomed as long as he is on the team. Hunt, Reid and Dorsey are gambling away our future and have No idea how to evaluate the QB position.

3. Cassel sucked so Smith will too.

4. Chiefs will suck this year because they have in the past. Even if they do manage to win a Playoff spot- they will still suck because they lose draft position next year.

5. It is better to continue to be national laughing stocks and go 2 -14 again in hopes of drafting a QB next year- then actually try to win now.

6. Even though Hunt has left no stone unturned by getting the absolute Best available at every spot all the way from GM, Head Coach, staff, consultants, QB and in the draft (they hope) he wants to just go 8-8 to make a few bucks next year.

7. Past stats will show exactly what a QB will do the next year or the following years. No QB in NFL history has been average on one team but turned their career around with a new team.

The list could go on- but there is no way to convince negative people that anything good could or will happen. The Chiefs suck, the coach sucks, Alex sucks woa is me the whole team is a joke, blah blah blah. What a bunch of negative Eeyores.
I'm talking about a philosphy. You can build to win now, or you can build to win big. If you build to win big, you don't get to dictate when that comes. You just build the finest team you can and when you are there, you are there.

Your owner told his GM to win now. Even if that is just a 3 year speed bump of mediocrity as a bridge to bigger things, it is just a 3 year delay in bigger things.

If you think your team is on the verge of winning big, and that the #34 pick this year wasn't useful and the #50 pick next year isn't useful, then I stand corrected.

I am fully ignorant how good your team is beyond your Pro Bowlers and your 7-9 record 2 years ago, which seems to be a better measure of your team than last year's fluke.

The Seattle Seahawks went to the playoffs at 7-9 just 2 years ago, and were on the doorstep of the super bowl just last year with their new Franchise Quarterback, Russell Wilson.

I'm not condemning your team to years of failure just because you wasted 2- 2nd round picks to win now instead of win big. I'm just saying that your owner compromised your progress toward winning big by demanding to win now.

That is a bad philosophy bay a bad owner to not just pick a good GM and tell him "Just win baby, I don't care how soon." (Al Davis pun intended for shock affect. Yes, it was a LOW BLOW.)

If it was the GM's philosophy rather than the owner, then you have a crappy GM.

If Alex Smith leads you to a 2016 super bowl win, then I will happily eat crow with humble pie for dessert.

I guess we'll see.

I'm glad my GM didn't have to rebuild from scratch because his former counterparts stockpiled high draft picks and didn't waste them stupidly during 10 years of moribund hell.

The Baltimore Ravens were the 2nd best opponent red zone scoring defense in the NFL in 2012.

http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat...ne-scoring-pct

I guess you think it is just magic to score against a team that only gives up 45% TDs in the red zone during the season and was even more stingy during the postseason.

You know damn well that Kaepernick said there was no play in the offensive playbook for cover 0.

2nd best red zone scoring defense + no offensive play for cover 0 = you do the math sonny.

I came here, just as I told you guys that I was going where ever alex smith went. do you recall that? Sure you do, im sure you along with your Kaep fan club can all ridiculing me, calling me not a true fan, but an alex smith fan. Remember that? hence the name ALEX SMITH FAN. It was in homage to you douchbe bags. And now that i am here, minding my own business, you try to tell people that I had mults over there. Which isnt true. Wanna know why? Tahoe knew from whatever location I was trying to create accounts from. i tried several times after the first time I was banned to get back on and couldnt. It wasnt until after the saints niner game that i was given my posting priviledges back. Tahoe is a facebook friend of mine. She is the one who authorized my deleting snoopy, and starting my second account, now mind you, NOT A MULT, AN ACTUAL NEW ACCOUNT WHERE I LOST MY POST COUNT, before i decided to come back at Snoopy.

So, you keep spreading your pathetic lies, and ill keep reporting you. Okay pumpkin?

I also noticed, how you decided to try to spread lies about me not being in the military, and also about me not having a wife. Did you see the pictures of both that I posted? I didnt see an apology so i figured you must of missed it.

now, stop telling lies about me, continue sucking everyone off here by telling them how bad alex smith sucks so you can keep your rep meter. Okay kaeps number one fan?
Not sure he's doing anything that's really blatant enough to be bannable, but I'll keep confirming that you're not a "mult" account. I'd suggest ignoring him.
