So I am building a deck that is attached to my house and you would typically install flashing under your siding to keep moisture from getting in it and ruining your wood behind the siding. I have wood panel siding though and would have to cut the siding to put flashing behind it which seems counter productive. The deck I pulled down did not have any flashing and there was zero rot behind it. Anyone know if I should be using it with panel siding?

Climate of where you live? How big is the roof overhang above the deck?

Live in Nebraska and the over hang is about 2-3 feet. The old deck had zero rot behind it and it had been up for almost 20 years. One thing I am slightly concerned about is I am extending the deck to the edge of the house where it might not be as well protected from the overhang.

You need a ledger board to attach the joists to. Where the ledger board will contact the house, cut away the siding to accept the ledger board. Install flashing and proceed with deck building.

The flashing isn't necessarily there to prevent water/moisture from getting behind the siding. It's there to stop water/moisture from getting behind the ledger board. If water gets between the ledger and structure, there ledger board, structure and even the siding if you were to leave it would be compromised. Eventually rotting and ruining the integrity of the deck, and possibly the home.

That is called board and batt siding, make no difference. Cut away siding where ledger will go...

Yep. You should already be cutting the siding where you attach the ledger.
