The Flintstones' 50th anniversary

The Flintstones' 50th anniversary

The search engine has replaced the multicoloured logo on its homepage with an image from the cult children's cartoon, which shows The Flintstones rumbling along a Stone Age road in their cobbled-together car.

The animated American sitcom ran from September 30 1960 to April 1 1966 on the ABC channel and became a favourite of children around the world.

Centred on the comical happenings in the life of a Stone Age man, Fred Flintstone, and his family, the show is set in the fictional town of Bedrock.

Fred and his best friend Barney Rubble get into entertaining scrapes while dinosaurs, sabre-toothed tigers and woolly mammoths roam freely among the barefoot cavemen.

The Stone Age setting paved the way for constant puns involving rocks. As well as the surnames - Flintstone and Rubble - the town of San Antonio becomes Sand-and-Stony-o and Bedrock's showbiz centre is called Hollyrock.

The celebrities idolised by Flintstone and family include Cary Granite and Stony Curtis. Mick Jadestone and the Rolling Boulders is Fred's favourite band.

The Flintstones is also famous for Fred's catchphrase, "Yaba Daba Doo!", and for its catchy themetune. It inspired the nickname "Freddie" for the England cricketer Andrew Flintoff.

Last year, two couples of die-hard fans got married dressed as Fred and Wilma Flintstone and their friends Barney and Betty Rubble.

The show was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Despite ending its run on ABC 1966, it continues to be shown on television channels around the world.

A Flintstones film called Viva Rock Vegas was released in 2000.

Over the past 12 years Google has created more than 900 Doodles to mark various birthdays, anniversaries and major world events.

It launched its first fully-interactive Doodle in May to celebrate the 30th birthday of Pac-Man. The graphic allowed the Pac-Man character to be moved using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

It was later claimed that the Pac-Man Doodle led to almost five million wasted hours and cost the economy around $120 million dollars, with office workers unable to tear themselves away from the rudimentary computer game.

Last year a series of Doodles showing UFOs and crop circles caused lengthy speculation before it was revealed that they were celebrating the birthday of HG Wells, the science fiction author.

The Gothic novelist Mary Shelly was honoured on the 213th anniversary of her birth with what was described by some bloggers as "the creepiest Doodle ever".

Most recently, Google celebrated its own 12th birthday with an image of a birthday cake.

The first Google Doodle marked the Burning Man Festival of 1998.

Cartoons today are garbage.

Give me the Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Top cat, Warner Bros., other Hana-Barbera, MGM and classic Disney any day.

Betty is to Wilma what Mary Anne is to Ginger.

That said, poor Pebbles...

Her and BamBam were two young lovers with nothin' better to do than sit around the house, get high and watch the tube. Well they decided to cut loose. They headed down to old El Paso, where they ran into a great big hassle. BamBam shot a man while robbing his castle and Pebbles took the money and ran. She later got hooked on meth and now "escorts" for her friend, Raji (who sometimes goes by "Baba Ganoush".)
