The Rain Man Classic: Worst Chiefs of All-Time

In honor of Rainman's various collections of individuals, both hero and scoundrel, I figured that we should establish who the worst Chiefs of all time were, taking into account only play on the field.

Requirements: 1 player per position.

Offense: LT,LG,C,RG,RT,WR1,WR2,TE,HB,FB,QB
Defense: RDE, NT, 3T, LDE, WLB, MLB, SLB, RCB, LCB, FS, SS

ST:1 KR, 1, P, 1 PR, 1 K, 1 LS, 1 KOS.

Rules: They must have started a minimum of three games for the Chiefs, with the exception of KOS and LS.

Nominations will be taken for two days, wherein a poll of choices will be presented, and the Herman Edwards Memorial All-Time Toilet Bowl Chiefs will be crowned.

Please provide reasoning for your nomination. Illustrate specific failures when necessary, and if possible.

The nominees are:

LG: Bob Simmons, Tom Condon
C: Rudy Niswanger, Jeff Smith, Tom Baugh

Jason Baker was an underachieving punter, though I think he's still in the league somewhere. We went through a spate of them a few years back - Steve Cheek, Baker, and someone else I don't recall.

Here's one for you. Zenon Andrushyn, though I may be spelling it wrong. I vaguely remember that he was there for a year between Stenerud and Lowery, and the great hope was that he was a world-beating guy who could be both our kicker and our punter. It seemed like a great idea, but it didn't work.

Jitter Fields as a return guy.

Great minds and such, see previous post.

Elmo Wright did the the jazzy legs exactly 6 times in his career. Had a promising rookie year and never followed it up. He was a hero of mine, too. But as a kid I was convinced that every player the Chiefs had were solid players if not borderline pro-bowlers. I just couldn't figure out why they couldn't win with those all-star rosters.

Zenon Andrusyshyn only punted for us in 1978. (No place kicking). He punted pretty good to, with a 41.1 net average, sixth in the league. Bob Grupp took over the punting duties the next year. Wonder why he didn't stick somewhere else?

I'd put Dave Krieg on that list for the Chiefs pathetic 17-0 playoff performance against San Diego.

That is a good net average. I remember at the time that it was well known that the Zenon experiment was a failure, but it still seems like a good punter is worth keeping. Maybe they decided he was just a punter and that Grupp was a better punter. Grupp made a pro bowl one year if I remember right, so maybe he just beat Zenon for the punter job.

Grupp averaged 43.6 the next year, then fell apart.

Slightly off topic, but as a kid I envisioned that the Chiefs roster was filled pretty much the same way my school filled out recreational teams. You just showed up and signed up. I was determined that once I became an adult I would show up early enough to get a roster spot. Right there in line next to Buck Buchanan and Willie Lanier.

And oddly, it might have produced superior teams these last couple of years and Haley appears to have considered it.

I think I found Zenon's problem. He only punted well in even-numbered games.

I don't know why, but I find this hilarious. In 8 even-numbered games, he averaged over 40 yards every game but one. In 8 odd-numbered games, he only averaged over 40 yards once. In odd-numbered games he averaged 37.8 yards per punt (and had one blocked), and in even numbered games he averaged 45.0 yards per punt.

I was poking around, looking for pictures or clips of Elmo Wright and found none.

But then there was this. How many guys have a racing dog named after them? There are three races in this clip, and [spoiler alert!] Elmo Wright wins 'em all.

But screw all that. Just fast forward to the end of the last race and listen to the announcer. I lol'd.

There are tons of "Greatest TD Dance" type vids there too, but it's all Chad Johnson, TO, etc. I guess Elmo, Homer Jones and Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, the George Washington, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson of the TD Celebratory Revolution I dare say, are long forgotten. It's a damn shame.

Or maybe the video's hard to find, too. Could be that...
