2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

nope, after 2 runs scored on that big error, I was just mentally keeping track of whether those runs would become earned based on later batters.

Game Over.

After 5 innings, the Royals starters beat the Rangers starters 6-1.

After 4 innings, the Royals scrubs fought the Rangers scrubs to a scoreless tie.

In other news, the game between the Diamondbacks and Giants was suspended after the players were chased off the field by a swarm of bees.

Bee swarm delays Giants game at Salt River

Quote:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – What is this, sting training?

A day after the Giants briefly evacuated Scottsdale Stadium because of a gas leak in a concession stand, their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields was delayed for 41 minutes in the top of the second inning because of a bee swarm Sunday.

The thick cloud of stinging critters began in center field and moved into the right field corner. Play was halted as Arizona center fielder Chris Young began running away from the swarm.

The bees traveled into the stands down the right field line, quickly emptying two sections of the sold-out crowd, before congregating near the end of the photographer’s well adjacent to the Giants dugout.

Members of the grounds crew staff actually borrowed lemonade from fans and spilled it in the back of their utility cart in the hopes of luring the bees away from players and fans. Another groundskeeper ventured up the concourse and came back with handfuls of cotton candy to add to the sticky bait mixture.

The swarm occurred after Ryan Theriot singled and Mike Fontenot doubled with one out against Arizona ace Ian Kennedy, who had dominated the Giants last season. Minor league left-hander Brian Burres stranded a runner in the first inning. The game was a scoreless tie.

The lengthy delay ensured that neither starting pitcher would return. Barry Enright replaced Kennedy when play resumed.

The stadium operations crew played the Beatles’ “Let it Be” during the delay. Triple-A Fresno announcer Doug Greenwald, who is calling games on sfgiants.com this spring, cracked that it was too early for a “B” game.

Here's the hilarious pitching line of the day:

... and that is why people should not give pitching wins as much respect as some of the most elderly of sportswriters give them.

Scott Elarton has just come into the game to pitch the 3rd inning for the Phillies this afternoon. There's a blast from the past. I did not realize he was even in anyone's camp. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008.

People sitting in the outfield GM area should take cover.

Looks like Chen had a rough day. 4 runs, 3 earned, in just 1.2 IP

Pitching stats are almost entirely worthless in Spring Training. For all we know, Chen's primary purpose in this start was to work on his change, not to try to get batters out.

MLB Gameday is experiencing some epic fail today. It's all over the map. Running about 2 innings behind at the moment

Escobar just barely missed a home run, and settled for a triple.
