Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

IMO, the arm strength concerns are overblown. He's got more than enough arm strength to make all the throws one needs to make.

It's more a mental thing.

Ad I'm not saying it will happen, but has anyone thought that hey, maybe the guy will flourish in Reid's system an that Reid is right and he is in fact a perfect for for the system Reid wants to run?

Can someone please, anyone please tell me the difference between the Kansas City Chiefs of 2013, and the difference from the 2011 49ers at the same point now. Not what you know that they turned into but what they were perceived to do?

Just so you know, they weren't picked to win the division, the Seahawks were, they weren't considered to have an elite defense.

http://www.nfl.com/kickoff/story/090...face-long-year

Pat Kirwan
They may very well wind up with the top spot and a chance to draft Andrew Luck. The offensive line needs to get better, Michael Crabtree needs to get healthy and Frank Gore needs to stop the contract complaints.
Prediction: 2-14, fourth in NFC West

Bucky Brooks
Jim Harbaugh will soon find out that his predecessors were right about Alex Smith's inability to get it done as a franchise quarterback.
Prediction: 3-13, fourth in NFC West

Elliot Harrison
Everyone seems to trust Jim Harbaugh until he starts talking about Alex Smith. Meanwhile, the 49ers lost many a player in free agency and have a learning curve under a new coach, making 2011 a difficult year to win a weak division.
Prediction: 7-9, third in NFC West

Jason La Canfora
Rookie head coach + QB by default + a disgruntled RB = Not a good combination.
Prediction: 5-11, fourth in NFC West

Steve Wyche
Everything comes back to the quarterback, Alex Smith. If something finally clicks, this hard-working, likable player could get San Francisco to 10 wins. If he's been what he's been, he won't finish the season as the starter.
Prediction: 6-10, third in NFC West

Chiefs Predictions By Pat Kirwan:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/...rd-predictions

It was only a matter of time before the Chiefs' new regime showed Jonathan Baldwin the door. They didn't draft him and swapping him for 49ers headache WR A.J. Jenkins was a fair deal. Alex Smith will run an efficient dink-and-dunk attack, and if Jamaal Charles stays healthy, the offense will be decent. The defense will be better because NT Dontari Poe has stepped up, and that should clean up a run defense that was ranked 27th in 2012. If the Chiefs jump to eight wins, it would be a big success. If they go 6-2 before the bye, expectations will rise.

Record 9-7

Just a thought. Go ahead rip it to shreds.....

The fact is, this situation for Alex Smith, and those who have seen it before, much like Chiefs fans claim they have seen it all before, is so eerily similar....

You don't give up a second and a second/third for a stopgap QB. Unless you're the Raiders.

True, but even when the Texans traded for Matt Schaub, he got a huge contract, so did Kolb, who were essentially traded for the same price tag.

That doesn't strike you funny?

That's right. Reid and Co. view Alex as far more than an average game managing stop-gap. That opinion will likely be quite true... unless the team around Smith totally blows.

I think your blowing the picks thin out I proportion a little, but even at that, we needed a starter this year and we got one for a 2nd round pick. So that's not really a wasted pick in that said guy is a ton better this year than anyone we could have gotten in the 2nd round.

And if he plays well enough that we lose another 2nd rounder, it's either that he's really excelling in this offense or he's managed his way to not **** up.

In Andy Reid typical offenses, I don't thin the second option can really happen, so until he receives a contract extension I view him as a stop gap with the chance to become the guy.

He lead his team to the NFC Championship game the year before. Maybe they thought he was more than just a stopgap?

We've established through Eli that spotty regular season QBs can rise to the occasion in the post season.

We've established through the likes of Romo and Peyton that awesome regular season QBs can and often do choke in the playoffs.

We've seen Smith pull off one of the great comebacks of recent playoff memory against the Saints and nearly make the SB against the Giants [sans an Armageddon of STs play].

I can understand regular season pessimism, I can even see pessimism that Smith can even get us to the playoffs, but if one concedes that he gets us there, there is woefully little evidence that a playoff flameout is a fait accompli, and there is certainly more evidence to the contrary.
I think his UPSIDE is getting the Chiefs into the 10-6 range. Maybe. I'd put more likelihood on 7-8 wins this season.

As for what he can do once in the playoffs... QBs with Smith's characteristics (Risk-adverse, play-it-safe, rely on defense and running game) have not fared extremely well in the playoffs.

That's the big question with Smith... can he be coached to make MORE lower-percentage throws, and take MORE chances to move the sticks? Even as "well" as he played in San Fran the past two seasons, those were consistent issues with him. He won't do that stuff unless his back is to the wall.

Smith's "Great" comeback against the Saints was against a terrible defense. Credit to him for making plays, but that D was really bad. You can't count on facing a D that bad in the playoffs. And blame the STs all you want, but Smith was a significant factor in the 49ers failure against the Giants in the NFC championship game. His horribleness on 3rd down is exactly what I'm talking about in the previous paragraph.

As much as both sides want to use it, you can't really use anything from smiths time in sf as a predictor here, because he's never been and wasn't ever asked to do te things he will be here.

Skillet wise, he can do it.

Mentally, we don't know yet.

Could be next year. This year was just shit for qbs. Jim got lucky because Luck told him about him, and Jim and Greg Roman went out to scout him. Andy Reid scouted all of the qbs this year, and just didn't like any of them.

I am almost 100 percent positive that a qb will be drafted by the Chiefs next season.

Or, maybe Bray is your Kaepernick.

They seem to like him a lot.

He did lead.

Just not the way people want to think of led.

He led camp alex during the lockout. He LED 6 game winning drives in the 4th quarter, and he LED two very impressive drives in the divisional round against the Saints.

That is leading is it not?

No, he doesn't lead in the fashion that a franchise qb does, but he leads when he has to, not because he HAS TO.

If that makes sense.
