Ya - I am not a big bra fan (in both senses) - great for stone chips and bugs - but bad for sun and water accumulation - unless you are fully anal about your vehicle.

I'm assuming you own the car outright. What's the reason you can't keep it as the insurance and maintenance costs shouldn't be a ton if it's in that good of shape like you say. Not to mention financially your obviously doing ok if you're looking to buy another BMW! I doubt my wife and I could ever share one car either.

Yeah, I'm tempted to keep it. But why pay $1,000+ a year when I don't need to? I can rent a car on the three occasions per year when my wife and I both need a car. Plus, I rent the second garage space out for $50 per month if I only have one car. That's $600 in revenues lost if I need that garage spot.

Admittedly, my situation is unusual since I walk to work and live in a central city. Most households legitimately need two cars, but mine doesn't.

Ah, living in the city is much different. We'd probably only have one car if that was the case too as I'd love if I could use public transport to get to work.

Guess it's up to how much you love that thing. You aren't going to be able to rent many Apricot colored BMWs you know?!

I really didn't want to put it on, but I noticed that I was getting some little chips in the front when I first bought the car. Since the paint never went to production I was wondering if perhaps it chipped easily, so I put the bra on it to protect it.

I've ended up with one tiny chip on the trunk in the ensuing years and have no idea how that one occurred, but otherwise the paint has held up very well. I think the chips in front may have been an anomaly from a particular drive in the mountains where I got caught behind a gravel truck right after I bought the car.

Lower ride height sports cars are more prone to rock chips in general and driving up the mountains is particularly bad for getting hit. Kind of one of those things you either deal with with or get Clearbra.

Yeah, I still remember that ride. I was on a mountain road in the snow and this dump truck was throwing off gravel everywhere. It was like Han Solo flying through the asteroid field, and it was about a month after I bought the car. My wife was driving and at some point pretty quickly I advised her to just stop on the road and let that thing get away from us. The car bra went up immediately after that incident.

When I moved from Denver to Texas I got my windshield replaced in my car at the time because a rock chip had turned into a crack. The guys at the glass place that does high volume asked me why the hell my windshield was so pitted and looked sandblasted. I-70 in the winter does that.

they help prevent rock chips from happening on the front of the car when you drive it around. Some cars come with a factory option to put a plastic see through bra over the clear coat to prevent chipping.

They can scratch the shit out of your paint, too, especially if you get sand or a small rock under them. That doesn't happen with the clear, obviously.

yep, you should never leave the car bra on full time. You put it on when you want to drive it, especially on long trips, then you take it off at night, make sure it's clean, then put it back on in the morning. If you use it right, it works fantastic. If you are lazy and just leave it on, it does more harm than good IMHO because it traps dirt and moisture and ultimately screws up the paint because the paint that is not covered by the bra fades while the paint under the bra stays the same color, thus creating a very bad overall look.
