Virus infected my daughters laptop

This is an LOL moment. 6 mos ago I asked her if her laptop was protected. "of course Dad, it comes that way."

I told her to have avast, cccleaner, and malwarebytes. Run them 2x/month.

Now she is in Barcelona, studying aboard and the laptop blows up...virus. "Can you fix this Dad" via whatsapp (a new app that I didn't know existed).

I am not that smart on this stuff. So I enlist the gurus of CP to fix. "before I have to throw it away".

Stats: when ever she gets on to the internet and click on anything, a new tab with the virus pops up and can't proceed. Keep in mind, she is in Barcelona, and have no clue what provider she is using. She did not have any probs while in the US. She said she ran the scans for the avast/ccleaner/malware bytes several times. She has tried Windows defender, anti malware, Mcafee and nothing works.

I am guessing it is the new provider in Spain that has messed things up.

thoughts?? I bragged how good the CP is and I have personally used you guys a bunch.

Thanks

I sometimes go to the far corners of the internet. Somehow something gets by me. Yeah just don't take any chances if the initial remedy's don't work. Just revert to a a checkpoint. Should be fairly recent one past when she noticed issues. No tech involved, just select recover/revert and then pick the date. Let it do its thing.

Have her try and restore back to a previous restore point before the infection happened.

Follow these instructions:

Restore from a system restore point
This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time, called a system restore point. Restore points are generated when you install a new app, driver, or Windows update, and when you create a restore point manually. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, and then select Control Panel.
Search Control Panel for Recovery.
Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.

Note:
If you’re not seeing any restore points, it might be because system protection isn’t turned on. To check, go to the Control Panel, search for Recovery, and then select Recovery > Configure System Restore > Configure and make sure Turn on system protection is selected.

Yep, at the very least, it should make the pc more operable and able to then try some removal tools/steps

Willing to bet it may have been done by downloading music or some entertainment. It's the only time it's happened to me

I'd tell her to go to safe mode first remove all files and do a recovery. Then tell her to follow your guide about anti virus.

What's the virus? What's the block message?

Can she see it in her installed programs or task manager? Has she uninstalled and re-installed her web browser?
