30 FAs in 30 Days: Vernon Carey
http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article...f-df4c7baa1c32
30 FAs in 30 Days: Vernon Carey NAME: Vernon Carey POSITION: Offensive Line HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-5, 340 COLLEGE: Miami (FL) GP/GS: 121/107 AGE/EXPEREINCE: 30/8 seasons BACKGROUND: Vernon Carey is a perfect snapshot of what represents an extremely thin pool of free agent tackles in 2012. Despite starting 15 games last season at right guard, Carey is regarded by the majority of NFL pundits as a top-five tackle option this off-season. The 19th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, Carey has played in Miami for his entire career. Though Carey moved to right guard last season, the best years of his career have come as a right tackle. Pro Football Focus rated Carey as the NFL’s fourth-best right tackle in 2008 and as the league’s third-best in 2009. Carey also made starts at left tackle before the Dolphins made Jake Long the number one pick in 2008. AVAILABILITY: Carey is likely to find a new home next season after spending eight years with Miami. Reports out of South Beach originally pointed to re-signing Carey as a priority this off-season, but that view has taken a 180-degree turn in recent weeks. The Dolphins are currently undergoing significant organizational change with the hiring of new head coach Joe Philbin and Carey doesn’t appear to be in the club’s plans for the future. Just this week, the Palm Beach Post predicted Carey’s value on the open market would be much higher than it is in Miami. COACHING CONNECTIONS: Brian Daboll shifted Carey from right tackle to right guard when he arrived as Miami’s offensive coordinator last season. The move was paired with the free agent addition of veteran tackle Marc Columbo. Carey was serviceable at guard, but most in Miami believed his play took a step backward when he moved inside. How Daboll views Carey’s potential at right tackle could be a factor in the Chiefs showing (or not showing) interest once Carey hits free agency on March 13th. WHY HE FITS: The intriguing thing about Carey is his experience and versatility. Signing the veteran could increase competition at right tackle and add depth at guard. While the Chiefs offensive line appears to be under construction this off-season, players who can play multiple positions might be more appealing additions through free agency. Despite a lack of depth on the offensive line last season, the Chiefs carried eight offensive linemen and often kept just seven of those bodies active each week. Kansas City will need position-flexible players if Daboll wants to take the same approach. Rodney Hudson and Steve Maneri served as the Chiefs reserve linemen in Crennel’s three games as head coach last season. Maneri has since moved to tight end. Developmental tackle David Mims was elevated to the 53-man roster after the release of Jared Gaither, but has yet to make his NFL debut. |

Well OC Brian Daboll would be a pretty good judge if Vernon Carey could come in and help the Chiefs at right tackle and back up at guard. If the Chiefs draft a right tackle it's still not bad to have a veteran that can play until the rookie is ready.

Any breathing RT that is not wheelchair-bound will be an improvement over Richardson.

Getting Moeaki back coupled with just an average right tackle would solidify the right side of this line.
Especially if we get a quarterback that understands blocking schemes and how to shift his protection. I'd be ok with bringing Carey in or drafting someone in rounds 2-3 for the position. The draft might be the better option. |
