There's a small group of old-timers that still do it, but we're a dying breed.
2009, I hate to be a broken record but that was the year. Judging by the neg rep and other factors that was when it started to get real nasty around here.

It absolutely was. The football threads were as bad as the bullshit you'd read in DC. And some of them still are.

Pioli and Cassel.

As I mentioned in another thread, it's a big reason why the 49er guys get treated the way they do.

After time, I've come to know a lot of the posting styles of certain CPers. So I feel pretty good about knowing if a flame was an insult or not. There are so many things here that make me smil[LIST=1]
  • GoChiefs - The repeated inferrence he's gay, or lives in his mom's basement, or his male modeling picture thing
  • Omaha - Everyone is fat
  • Frazod - Appliance Killer
  • Hometeam - Took the Fisty McTatt Thread like a champ
  • PR Capon'es Cat Ramp
  • Midnight Vulture
  • Answers - PM Bob Dole
  • Sorter - insane collection of, apparently, meticulously filed Gifs
  • Gif'd Up
  • Rain Man' - Crazy assed topics make things interesting
  • FAX - .....when he's around (Come back)
  • Hawk - Is an Ass Man

So many things that make me smile with either a perfectly timed response, or Gif, or reference to an old thread etc.

Luckily, I can usually tell by the Thread Title and Thread starter, if it's something I'll read. There is definitely a lot of chaff to sort through these days.

But it's still the most fun insane asylum on the interwebz

This is why I have been lurking for the past 10 years. Personally, I add the kindness of Simply Red to the list.

This is still the most fun insane asylum on the net. What makes it fun is the freedom for anyone to say anything, although this can occasionally devolve into a flame war between two or three members. Well-worded insults are still entertaining to read (see Frazod's post on page one).

Sorting through the "chaff" has become second nature now. One just has to realize that any thread involving someone from Japan or China is going to have someone who STILL thinks it is witty to transpose the "L" and "R" sounds. Any thread involving race will have some wonderful, common-sense insight mixed in with a hearty dose of trolling.

I read and lurk in the Planet because it is a fun place to be. No one is afraid to say what's on their mind about any topic, pretty much free from fear of moderation. It's the American way.

I think that this post is really key. If you really get to know the posting styles of other people around here, you can have a lot of fun. It really isn't that hard to know whose posts you should engage with and who you should just roll your eyes at and ignore.

When "old timers" who aren't here much gripe about how much things have changed, I suspect that it's mostly caused by less awareness of who is who anymore. Online forums are definitely one of those things where frequent visitors feel more involved than those who just drop by from time to time.

That's easy to diagnose. Matt Cassel turned many of his CP critics into foaming-mouthed idiots who employed a scorched earth approach to dealing with the people who were willing to wait and see. Because of DC, of course.

The people that were willing to "wait and see" used the same methodology by and large.

DC isn't a cause, it's a symptom.

Our society lost any sense of a middle ground a long, long time ago.

There was never a "wait and see" mob beating up on the anti-Cassel stalwarts. No, the mob was on the anti-Cassel side and that's where the vitriol was born even if some of the "wait-and-see" guys stood their ground and responded in kind. It's the same way with the QB-in-the-first drafturbators, the Geno-at-1.1 cultists and the Alex-Smith-is-Matt-Cassel knee-jerkers.

The idea that was some "mob" is ridiculous.

Both sides engaged in inflammatory and vitriolic behavior.

The "he started it" thing is completely childish.

I was on the "wait and see" side by the way, and I know how it went.

Personally, I was too. The problem was I held on to it too long. When you love a team and make it a point for the highlights of a few months to be those Sundays, it tends to make one a bit defensive. Combine that with getting your face rubbed in it, not only on the TV but among fellow fans, it will build some bad blood.

I got me some of that bad blood cause of Cat Massel.

The "both sides are equally guilty" thing is absurd. Of course both sides eventually engaged in the vitriol. I said that in my post.
