IIRC from the Oregon State games that I've watched (since my wife is a fan).....his WRs dropped a lot of balls this last season.

Sean's line sucked hard last year and the receivers were all very young and inexperienced. I thought he started fairly well but kind of went into a shell and stopped trusting his wideouts. He was very good in 2013 and during the 2012 6-0 start. In 2012, he hurt a knee against Wazzu and was tentative when he came back. Riley kept playing the QB hokey-pokey that year and during the next year's off-season, which didn't help him any.
The Stanford game last year was a good example of what Pest mentioned. When Sean would finally get some time and a WR actually got open(rare), he would put the ball right in the hands of his WR and they would drop it. Sean took a lot of sacks last year because he would have someone right on him when he finished his dropback. When he did have time, the WR weren't open. Think Alex against Miami last year. He has a strong arm and is accurate. His weakness is that he isn't very athletic. It isn't just taking off and running that is a problem; he doesn't move well in the pocket, though that may be from a lack of trust in his line. I doubt he is a 1st year starter but may really blossom in the right system once he gains some trust in the system. The Foles comparison is a pretty good one, I think. Sean had an excellent Pro Day and I've seen some talk that it has made his stock rise quite a bit. |

One thing I'll say here is that Rob Rang actually wrote a great piece on him for CBS in my opinion. There is a bunch to love about Mannion's game. Pro offense, pro arm, pro size. Then there is the stuff that really, really scares me about his game. Not mobile, clunky in his get-out from center and throughout his drops, and worst of all he's a drifter. He drifts away from pressure and makes bad throw because of it. He doesn't step up and deliver catch-able balls. It makes him awful. He throws interceptions, he makes terrible reads and deliveries, and he takes sacks. If Mannion can learn to not fear pressure, which I find to be a near unteachable trait, then he will be a star in the NFL. If he can't do that, he's never going to amount to anything more than a clipboard holder taking up a roster spot. The decision really comes down to that one facet, and it scares the shit out of me.

Another thing to consider is that the Beavers' defense was bad the whole time he was here and there was a lot of pressure on Sean to keep up, which I think led to him forcing things at times. He had nice comebacks against good teams several times that were blown by the defense (this year at Utah, last year against Oregon, this year against Arizona State, though they pulled that one out). He also almost never had a running game to take pressure off.

By the way, the thought that someone else would actually hire Mark Banker as defensive coordinator...

Back to Sean. Apparently the three teams that showed the most interest in him during his Pro Day were the Titans, the Browns and the Broncos.
None of those are appealing choices (for me). |

I like Mannion.
Accurate, big, good delivery. Seems to have a good understanding of the game. I think he's better than recent tall, pocket guys like Bray, Mallet, Osweiller, etc. Solid guy as well. I think he'd be a solid guy to have in the system. I'd take him over Daniel, Bray or Murray as the third option/developmental guy behind Pryor (who I think has a much better skill set than any of the other stiffs on roster at the position). |
