Who did you see open before they were huge?

Since music threads seem popular, it got me thinking. If there's a thread like this, merge away.

Who did you see as an opener before they were famous or very famous?

I'd have to say Metallica opening for Ozzy Osbourne back in the mid 80s ("Master of Puppets"). They weren't exactly unknown, but they were far from mainstream yet. I also saw Queensryche open for KISS around that time (KISS was on their "Animalize" tour and Queensryche was brand new).

I saw Dave Matthews Band open for Phish in 1994 in Pelham, AL. I thought they sucked, and even back then their fans were a bunch of idiot frat boys.

Oh, I forgot, back in the 80s I saw Yngwie Malmsteen open for... oh, wait, never mind, he opened for everyone. (I remember a radio jockey joking that his name was Swedish for "opening act".)

Define huge? Even though they only had a few really big hits I saw POD several years before they broke out on Atlantic Records. Played a concert that was just them at a hole in the wall here in Springfield. They were on their way to St. Louis IIRC.

I also saw Metallica open for Ozzy, it was in Rochester, NY. It was Master of Puppets tour for them. I still remember they had headstones on stage like a graveyard. They were known by the more die hard metal heads back then, but they weren't mainstream. I actually shot a bottle rocket onstage during the show (yes, it was stupid and idiotic and I don't know why I did it. I was young). I snuck it in and shot it from a plastic cup with a top on it. It landed right next to the drummer and blew up, and they didn't miss a beat or even flinch or look at it.

Oh and when I saw Pearl Jam at Lollapalooza they were like the second act on. They got billing behind Soundgarden, Jesus and Mary Chain, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry and Ice Cube.

Yeah, IIRC they had a nice little moshpit going on right at the front of the stage, while the rest of the arena was sort of bewildered at the high-speed thrash and were out getting concessions, LOL. I think I saw them in Springfield MA. (At that time, the venue rotations out here were Springfield MA, Worcester MA, and Providence RI. Bands rarely played the Boston Garden.)

I saw Emerson Drive play at some hole in the wall bar in Minneapolis, MN. Way back before they ever sold an album etc. My buddy worked there as the main bartender, partied with them afterwards.

I saw .38 Special open for Peter Frampton (J. Geils actually was second on the bill) in 1977.

Oh, and since I haven't broken this out in a long time: I was best friends with Ben Folds in 7th grade. So I guess you could say I saw him before he was huge.
