The author does a nice job of setting up and describing the Galaxy post-ROTJ. He's a good writer. The story isn't boring. It's definitely Star Wars.

But it's very hard to keep track of the characters, and I'm increasingly frustrated by the lack of any involvement from Han, Leia or Luke.

I enjoy the chapters with Ackbar, Mon Mothma and Wedge because I can relate to those characters. I know who they are. I'm somewhat emotionally involved with them already.

These new characters...I really could give a **** about. Although the Imperial Admiral bitch is interesting.

So, just fleshing out the surroundings with an uninteresting set of side-characters, then?

So far, yes. The story so far actually sort of reminds me of Rebels, with the Imperial remnant dominating what few sectors it still controls.

But the book keeps switching between four different stories and it's confusing.

I'm warming up to the book now. It's getting easier to follow the longer I read.

One of my favorite bits: the teenager who runs a junk shop, has a guard droid called "Mister Bones." It's an old Clone Wars battle droid re-purposed to be a whirling dynamo of bladed death. He's saved the kids ass twice now.

Just reading about it makes me want to see it animated.

One thing that I DO appreciate about the book's departure from the OT cast is that it's great to flesh out the Ackbar/Wedge/Mon Mothma characters.

This is cool.

Quote:
Well before the events of The Force Awakens, Supreme Leader Snoke began corrupting the Republic senate set up after Return of the Jedi.

Senators in the Republic remember the opulence of the Imperial Senate before Emperor Palpatine stabbed them in the back and Snoke’s allure is rather seductive for the greedy politicians.

Treaties were signed stopping the Republic from attacking the First Order as long as they remained in the Outer Rim, well beyond the Republic territories.

General Organa started the secret Resistance as she felt the First Order would one day attack and she would need a force to thwart their advancements while the Republic gained its senses.

These corrupt and old Imperial Senators (now Republic senators) want the First Order to prevail so they can reinstate the Imperial Senate under which they once prospered.

After the events of The Force Awakens, the First Order is known to be a threat because of the use of the Starkiller and the treaty is effectively broken.

The Republic is ripped apart as Senators side with Snoke and others side with democracy.

The Galactic Civil War returns and the Galaxy can no longer pretend like it solved the crisis after Palpatine’s death.

Does it strike anyone else that we're about 10 weeks away from episode 7 being out?

This year has been zipping by.

So if you've read Aftermath...any theories on who the mysterious Admiral is at the end?

I don't think it's Palpatine. It feels like Thrawn. It's supposed to be someone who was presumed dead after Endor. Maybe Piett?

Also another thing about Aftermath: Boba Fett definitely surived the Sarlacc.

And there's one chapter with Han and Chewie.

The book starts a little slow but builds and ends with a bang. Can't wait for the 2nd book in the trilogy.

Piett would be kind of sweet. Always good to see the gay Admiral back in action with his various Yeoman.
