The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Kaep can be an elite QB, while Alex is a good QB.
Well then, after watching the YEARS of magnitude suck that is the KC Chiefs, can you fault us for wanting to do what the 49ers did (take a chance on a QB in the draft) instead of settling for a mediocre QB who has worse career stats than Matt Cassel?

The majority of people on this forum understand what it takes to win in this league and are pushing for ELITE, not settling for "Good" or "manageable".

I am disappointed that we may not have a very good alternative to taking a QB most teams wouldn't take until maybe 15th or 16th in most drafts. But I have also said that if that's the Chiefs will do, I'll accept it. I'm also realistic enough to know none of us here are doing the picking, but some take it so seriously that they resort to insults for the other person with a different opinion.
So basically you'll never pick a side because that would mean that you would end up wrong at some point in time. You'd rather not be pointed out as being wrong....so you'll be wishy washy the entire ****ing time.

Great to know.

Did you see Kaepernick as a future super star? Exactly. Teams HAVE TO TAKE A CHANCE, not settle for other teams scrubs. The 49ers know Alex Smith is not good enough and that is why he is being shopped. If he was good enough, you assholes would still be starting him next season.
The 49ers liked Kaep...ALOT....and took him in the SECOND ROUND.

They could have taken Gabbert, Ponder, Locker, and Dalton.

They didn't...they took Aldon Smith and then moved up in round 2 for Kaep.

Lets be real here for a second too....there were lots of peeps who DIDN'T like the pick of Kaep in round 2. He was from a "gimmich offense" and had a funky delivery.

I've been round and round on this one. I am not advocatting the Cheifs trade for Alex Smith. I think he's much better than you guys give him credit for, but I understand the idea that you want "your own guy" who just might have a chance at greatness.

I just don't happen to think that Geno is that guy. He reminds me of too many spread QBs in college who flammed out in the pros.

Bring in a guy like Alex Smith who has played extremely well the past two seasons, and even if he doesn't work out you still have at least a guy that brings leadership, doesn't make mistakes, 18-5(19-6 w/ playoffs), and 2 of his last 4 games were about as perfect as you can have. 18/19 for 233 and 3 tds, 8/9 1 td his game he was hurt and his 300 yard 3td game against the Bills in which he was nearly perfect as well. Not to mention leading the league in completion percentage, QBR, td/int ratio (remember 3 of his 5 were in one game in which he had a broken finger).

This idea that the media has portrayed on Alex has obviously gotten to fans here. Alex may not be an explosive QB that everyone wants but he is no Matt Cassel. With him being coached by Reid running a WCO in which he has plenty of experience, with him having Charles as a RB with a decent line, I think Alex could win your division for you.

If not at the very least you have a stop gap that is better than any of these other guys I've seen mentioned. Alex has 2 years in a row of playing well, Matt Flynn has 2 games. Matt Cassell? Go ahead and stay with him and see how far you go.
Kill yourself. And nevar procreate.

How much film have you watched? Just a highlight video or two, mixed in with whatever NFLN/ESPN decide to breakdown?

If you knew Kaep was going to be as good as he is, would you take him as the #1 overall pick.... or would that be reaching?

The point is. QB is our HIGHEST need BY FAR, and we just happen to have the #1 overall pick. That seems like GREAT VALUE to me... especially considering there is not any so called "Can't miss ELITE" prospects that you can't pass up in this draft.

Funny how he says that with Kaep as their QB. I won't bother looking up the quotes, but I bet the same or similar was said about him.

But Frankie... the alternative is taking a LT most teams wouldn't take until 12 or 13 in most drafts. Or a DE most teams wouldn't take until 15 or 16. Or a CB most teams wouldn't take until then, either.

If that's the case, why wring hands about taking a QB? All things being equal, the guy with the most positional value has the more potential reward.
