Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary

Well, well, well ... look who's getting back in fighting shape.

Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.

Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project.

The last major Godzilla outing, an American, New York-set version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. Toho quickly produced "Godzilla 2000," in which the big beast took on an evil UFO, the following year.

But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and merchandising tie-ins and seems perpetually ready to rear up again for new audiences.

The new film is shooting for a 2012 release.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Added Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, "Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known."

The two companies have partnered on such global properties as "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Superman Returns" and "The Hangover," which have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. Together, they have a remake of "Clash of the Titans" stomping into theaters Friday.

I went to see it last night. My expectations were very low going in but I have to say that it is the best Godzilla movie ever made.

I'd agree the 3D isn't necessary. Only reason I saw it was in 3D was because there was no 2D IMAX option, and I wanted to see in IMAX. If you're seeing it on a standard screen 2D will be fine.

Only thing that sucked about the movie. I kept waiting for the two midget japanese girls singing.


And him killing the male still confuses me on how it happened.

It looked to me like he just tail whipped it to death. He was probably 3 times his size so I don't think that's unlikely..

I was thinking though. What does Godzilla eat? They said all these creatures feed On radiation but Godzilla followed the MUTOs to a couple radioactive sites and never seemed interested in "feeding".

I guess it's possible that he absorbs it somehow but it seemed Godzilla exists solely to off other monsters.

Oh, and that HALO jump scene was well done also. Loved the look of this movie.

I thought it was that he went deep into the earth's crust to feed off the radiation down below, or somesuch thing, no?

I saw it and thought it was very entertaining. Infinitely better than the 1998 disaster with Broderick, and just a good, solid, entertaining movie.

One of the funniest parts (for me) was when the humans were discussing how to deal with everything that is going on, and my 10 year old son leans over and says "I know....build giant robots!"

I dont even hardly consider that a Godzilla movie. It doesnt even feel like one. That Honest Trailer thing said it best. They were trying to mimic Jurrasic Park in the city.

Regarding the sequel I have heard a couple of things:

There is a Mothra easter egg in the movie. I think when Cranston goes back to his house in one of the terrariums there is a piece of paper or something that says Mothra on it

I read an article that said in a few select countries there was a clip shown after the credits that had Mothra in it attacking something.

We got back to the house after seeing Godzilla at the theater and I showed my boys (aged 13 and 10) some of these types of "classic" clips and they were like "oh, my, God, that is unbelievably awful. You watched this?!?"

Kids today have no idea. We had five TV channels and no internet, so it was either that, bowling, golf, the news, or some chick thing. WTF do you want?
