Legendary sportscaster Al Michaels arrested, charged with DUI

(CNN) -- The man revered for yelling "Do you believe in miracles?" as the U.S. hockey team upset the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DUI in Southern California on Friday night, Santa Monica police said.

Sgt. Ryan Gradle said Michaels, the current play-by-play announcer for NBC's "Sunday Night Football," was extremely cooperative and was released on his own recognizance Saturday morning.

Michaels was arrested shortly before 10 p.m., then spent a little more than five hours in the Santa Monica City Jail, the Los Angeles Inmate Information Center said.

He's scheduled to appear at Los Angeles Municipal Court at 8:30 a.m. on June 26.

Neither Michaels nor NBC had immediate comment.

CNN has reached out to Michaels' representatives for a response.

Agreed. I don't know how anyone can argue that. He is the most professional and covers everything, doesn't miss a beat and isn't to the point yet with his age where he is making mistakes all game long, like some did. Guy has a great voice and knows history.

I don't have a problem with Al, but to your point, yes I would like to get some young up and coming new commentators to, but most of them are terrible. They either want to smother us with stats or they think they are bigger than the game and get one hell of an ego.

They aren't easy to find, that's why Al is still working at 68 cause the networks will let him write his own check to keep him around.
