Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Interesting notes about Martin from CBS draft report:

* He turned down a chance to be the first 4th generation black student at Harvard to go to Stanford. Guy is smart and he apparently comes from a really smart family.

* He only did 20 reps of 225 at Stanford's pro day (didn't attend the combine). Some concern about whether or not he was naturally strong enough to handle pro pass protection duties.

I could see either of these being the kind of things that could get you singled out by a guy like Incognito.

You did the equivalent of assuming a CVA when a patient presents with low back pain and dysuria.

Lol, I understand that. That wasn't my point. I know he isn't available. I'm saying fan culture is twisted when we'd rath have a known cancer in our locker room than a perceived pussy.

I'd rather the younger kid who can play who might be a bit reserved in his personality, than a giant ****ing asshole cancer who can play the game. Even if Martin is a pussy, he isn't on the field.
I get that he isn't available, but I love that people would rather have the cancer in our locker room than someone who can play but may have had a timid upbringing and it shows in certain ways.
So let me say it,

Martin? Bring him for a look? God knows we need help.
Based on what little we know, I'd rather have Martin on the team than Incognito, but PFF has Incognito at +6.3 overall (14th ranked G) and Martin at -6.9 (63rd ranked T), so Martin doesn't necessarily look like a huge prize on the field. And given the way many of their teammates have come to the defense of Incognito, I'd be wary about his locker room presence too.

I don't think that's the case. I think we were just talking about which guy was more likely to be available. I also think the talk about signing Incognito was somewhat tongue in cheek.

Negative. You might see it as a CVA because it seems like such a huge accusation to you based on your own internal feelings about homosexuality, but in reality it's more like ordering a urine sample because it's cheap and easy to check out. If we rule it out, then we can move on from there.

Holy shit. Really? Do you even know what you are talking about at this point? I'm saying you took two completely unrelated things (bullying and no girlfriend) and applied it to his sexual orientation. That has nothing to do with my feelings on homosexuality. It was an illustration of the ridiculous nature of your assumption.

This is unbelievably annoying and pointless. You make a living in DC, and it's quite apparent that you will resort to some of the most illogical things to get your point across.

Yes, I do know what I'm talking about. I recognize that this hysteria over the topic of homosexuality is coming from within you. You seem to really want to be tolerant of homosexuality on the outside (to the point where you are ready to jump on anyone who treats it as a negative character trait), but inside you're so uncomfortable with it that you automatically assume that anyone who brings it up is treating it as a negative character trait (because on some level it still is to you).

Feel free to disengage at any time. I'm not the one hounding you about this topic.

Oh, and maybe you shouldn't have quit your day job for this medical school adventure.

This weird bit where you post things like, "Take it to DC," is pretty absurd considering you're involved with these discussions on a frequent basis.

Holy shit, that's insane!

What kind of parent would prioritize education or the arts over football? Only pussies.

Sometimes I hate this country. I'll never understand the contempt shown towards intelligence and culture.

Meh. Fisher and Joeckel repped 27x. Fluker repped 21x, and i dont think anyone is questioning his strength. Nate Solder (arguably one of the best tackles in the NFL) benched 21x.

IMO 20 reps is strong enough for pas pro. Pass pro is more about technique and absorbing punishment (i.e. your moving back) compared to dealing it out.
