Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Guess what? It never ****ing is.

2013, which you called garbage, was poised to be potentially a pretty great one. Because next year's QB class always is.

2014 isn't going to be anything special. Teams may feel safer about drafting guys in the first round, but teams also felt safe about drafting Jake Locker, Brandon Weeden, Ryan Tannehill, and a bunch of other slapdicks in the 1st round.

that's 7 qbs. One of them will be there at 20.......

And before last college football season, the 2013 QB class was supposed to be good too. Sorry, none of those names excite me right now. We'll see after the college season plays out I guess.

Very excited about what our offense will look like this year.

Reid is going to do exactly what Harbaugh did and give Alex several options to look for in the passing game each passing play, just like how he excelled in SF.

Don't see any reason why he can't have success doing that more often with Andy Reid.

Alex had a 9-3 record with 14 TD's to 7 INT's (3 in his worst game) when he passed the ball 30 or more times the last 2 years. Don't see any reason why he can't continue to have success doing this with a QB friendly system.

Logan Thomas was complete garbage last season, so he'll need a big rebound year to be discussed in the first.

This name isn't popular with some, but I do like Murray a lot, and I believe he might well be available at the back of the first round. If not, we can always package our first and second rounders to...****.

I don't want or expect for this franchise to have to lose to be able to draft a good QB. I would rather see us give up multiple picks and move up when a quality player is there.

30 passes per game is below league average. The average across the league was 35 passes per game.

Alex is 5-13 when he throws at least 35 times.

Dorsey/Reid does not equal Pioli/Crennel, or Peterson/Edwards.

There was no #1 QB around this year. So they took the highest rated vet.

Both Dorsey and Reid have been around/chosen/groomed franchise QB's. To assume they will now become Carl Peterson and Marty Shottenheimer circa 1990 is absurd.

Neither Dorsey nor Reid give a rat's ass what Pioli or Peterson did because they shouldn't. They are doing what they feel is best with the options they have available to them right NOW. Through that prism, it's pretty easy to be pleased so far.

There are two diiferent lines of thought here.
To preface those, I agree that they aren't concerned with the decisions that previous regimes have made.

That said, the decision to trade for one of two possible reasons.
They believe he can lead this team to a SB, or they simply wanted to stop the bleeding and bring in a QB that simply won't lose games.

Either way, I question the decision.
If it's because they have SB aspirations, then I question their evaluation.
Maybe they prove me wrong, but I just don't see a SB QB.

If they just brought him in to simply stop the bleeding, they could have brought in a cheaper alternative.

Either, unless Smith proves me wrong about his SB potential, they invested too much.

I haven't stuck up for Sanchez.

I've stuck up for my position regarding Sanchez.

I have clearly stated that he has sucked since he came up.

I was also very clear in my position that I thought he was a kid with a high ceiling, but that it would be a mistake to start him right away.

Now, does that mean that I'd be right if they did bring him along slowly?

No.

But we'll never know for certain that I was wrong, either.

I've also pointed out that it was at this point in his career that Brees started to realize some of his potential.

I have my doubts that Sanchez will start to get it, because I believed that starting him too early could easily ruin his career.

But the potential for growth does still exist.
