Titans cut Rob Bironas
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10...er-rob-bironas
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Titans released Rob Bironas, their kicker since 2005, on Wednesday, the team announced. "We want to thank Rob for his nine years of service to the Titans. He has been an outstanding kicker and we appreciate him both for his contributions on the field and in our community," general manager Ruston Webster said in a statement. Rob Bironas converted on 25 of 29 field goal attempts in 2013 but his touchback rate on kickoffs has sunk for three straight seasons. Bironas was due a $250,000 roster bonus and a $2.875 million base salary in 2014, the second year of a two-year, $6.675 million contract. He collected a $1.5 million signing bonus with that deal, so the Titans will carry a $750,000 cap charge for him in 2014. The team is expected to replace him the same way it replaced Gary Anderson in 2005 -- by searching for a young player it can develop like it did when it found Bironas. Assistant special teams coach Steve Hoffman helped develop Ryan Succop in Kansas City and Dan Carpenter in Miami. Carpenter is now in Buffalo. Bironas hit 25 of 29 field goal attempts in 2013, but indications are the team doesn't feel his cost and production added up going forward. His touchback rate on kickoffs has sunk for three years in a row, from 56.4 percent in 2011, to 50 percent in 2012, to 38.6 percent last season. The Titans cut right tackle David Stewart earlier this month. With Stewart and Bironas gone, left tackle Michael Roos becomes the team's senior-most player, the last remaining Titan who joined the franchise in 2005. |

He probably would have beat San Diego at the end of the year.

Succop at one point was an asset. Not anymore.

So many vaginas were bruised during that San Diego game
Of all the many games that the Chiefs have lost since Succop was drafted in 2009, there is precisely ONE loss that can be attributed directly to Succop. And it was in a game that didn't matter so much that the coaches played all the backups. If you'd like to pin the 2011 Oakland game on him, remember that both of his kicks were BLOCKED. And they were blocked by a defensive line/special teams unit that overpowered the Chiefs in the trenches the entire freakin game. Succop should have gotten those kicks up higher, sure, but getting a field goal blocked is nothing like outright whiffing. I'm not some Succop champion or anything, but I do know that as far as kickers go, if the one you got does his job well enough, then don't ****ing mess with it. So much can go so wrong in so little time if you change horses like that. If Succop starts to turn into a truly terrible kicker like Mason Crosby, then absolutely we should replace him. But until then, the Chiefs haven't had a winless streak in the playoffs for so long because Ryan Succop ruined the San Diego game that didn't matter. |

Bironas is just as accurate and has a much stronger leg more options for long range field goals and better kickoff depth

Bironas converted 27.4 percent of his kickoffs (164 of 598) into touchbacks from 2005-12, ranking ninth in the league in that time span.

It doesn't hurt to bring him in and sign him to compete with Succop. Just letting know Succop he better bust his ass off in Camp and don't pull this Justin Medlock on us.
