Jets talking to Law

Eventually, Law could be on Jets' side

One of the Jets' starting cornerbacks might not currently be on the roster, and coach Herman Edwards acknowledged yesterday that his name might be Ty Law.

"He's called me a couple of times," Edwards said. "I've known Ty Law for years ... There's 53 guys [on the roster once the season starts], and they are not all here yet, probably."

Law, rehabbing a broken foot, is expected to be ready to work out for suitors at the end of May. Edwards said he'd have to prove in a workout that he's healthy before the Jets would sign him. In the meantime, Ray Mickens is penciled in as the starter opposite David Barrett.

Pouha a load of promise

The Jets have high hopes for third-round pick Sione Pouha, who could gobble up some of Jason Ferguson's reps at nose tackle.

The absence of Ferguson doesn't change "how I work out or change how I prepare, because I prepare to the max," Pouha said. Pouha, 26, has some substance to him - and not just because he's 6-3, 325 pounds. He spent two years working with a Mormon mission in Pittsburgh, and in 2002 he rescued an unconscious woman from a burning apartment in Salt Lake City.

"The guy has discipline," Edwards said.

Jet streams

Ben Graham, an Australian Rules Football star, has taken to punting more quickly than special-teams coach Mike Westhoff expected. He'll battle veteran Micah Knorr in training camp ... K Mike Nugent rebounded from his inauspicious debut, going 6-for-6 indoors yesterday ... Minicamp concludes today with one practice closed to reporters.

Not surprising. It's the one big hole they still have.

I used to be a fan of Pennington's, thinking he's the real deal, but I'm starting to think maybe all those comments about lack of arm strength are accurate. His inability to stay healthy is also a big issue.

Backup RB for CuMar may be an issue. He's got to start slowing down any decade now...

If there is one back who doesn't get near enough props it is Martin. He just goes to work day in and day out. You've got to love a guy like that.

If Law comes back healthy to the Jets I'm sure he'll have a great year and we'll hear some cries of "The Chiefs gave up a second when they could have had Law for free!" Under the circumstances though, the Chiefs made the right move with Pat.
